Following its opening in 2019, the Peninsula Heart Clinic is an independently operated cardiology centre in partnership with University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. Treatment at the Peninsula Heart Clinic is delivered through a brand new, state-of-the-art cardiac cath lab, 5-bed recovery, 5-chair radial lounge, 3 individual ensuite bedrooms and extensive outpatient clinic facilities. As part of our planned service expansion, we are now recruiting new members to our highly skilled team. This is an excellent opportunity to join an established team as we grow our service. Working in a brand new, purpose-built facility you will be welcomed as an integral part of the team, delivering high quality care to patients in the South West.

Main duties of the job:

  • The post holder will work as part of the Cardiac Catheter Lab team assisting medical staff with diagnostic and interventional procedures, angiogram, PCI, pacing and EPS.
  • In this theatre style environment the nurse/practitioner will have both scrub and circulating duties.
  • There is a requirement to wear lead PPE during the procedures.
  • You will be required to promote and maintain a caring and highly professional standard of nursing, meeting the needs of the patients pre and post cath lab procedures.
  • You will act as a professional role model.
  • The successful candidate will be an RGN (min 2 yrs experience in a cardiology setting), will be ILS trained and will have an awareness of how to deal with cardiac emergencies and post cath-lab-procedure complications.

Job responsibilities:

  • Holds first level registration.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates programmes of care.
  • Records vital signs and reports any deterioration of clinical condition to senior nurse.
  • Be able to recognise life threatening arrhythmias and summon help.
  • Be able to perform and interpret ECGs.
  • Able to perform venepuncture and cannulation.
  • ILS trained.
  • Scrub for patients undergoing cardiac catheterisation, pacemaker implantation and PCI.
  • Teach and supervise junior staff nurses and unqualified staff.
  • Ability to lead the unit team if required.
  • Be able to help prepare & escort patients under supervision if needed e.g. during transfer to NHS hospital for urgent/ongoing/emergency care.
  • Prepare the lab for clinical procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality in respect of all medical and nursing records and also inter-personal issues with colleagues.
  • Interpret the significance of the patients clinical observations and records, making decisions and planning in areas affecting patient care; report promptly to medical or appropriate staff any matters, which fall outside his/her responsibility.
  • Assist with manual handling and transferring of patients complying with the Moving and Handling policy.
  • Maintain the privacy and dignity of patients and staff at all times.
  • To deliver a high-quality cardiology service to our patients at all times.

Managerial:

  • To lead care management and delivery.
  • To share professionalism and clinical expertise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ensure the provision of a high standard of care to all service users.
  • To work within the framework of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • To act as a role model for junior staff.
  • To maintain own professional practice and have knowledge of new developments and concepts including the Knowledge & Skills framework.
  • To be aware of relevant nursing research and promote and participate in research initiatives.
  • Ensure adherence to policies, guidelines and directives at all times.
  • To be guided by NMC.HCPC directives e.g. Administration of Medicines, Exercising Accountability, Scope of Professional Practice, Guidelines for Record Keeping.
  • To maintain a high level of competent practice within the Scope of Professional Practice.
  • Ensure complete and accurate documentation of all clinical care provided in the department.
  • Assess workloads and be aware of changing situations and act accordingly.
  • Ensure compliance with all local and national policies.
  • Participate in audit where appropriate.
  • Complete all patient documentation accurately and in a timely manner.

Educational:

  • Participate in relevant induction programmes for new staff.
  • To participate in educational programmes for own professional development, including (but not limited to) mandatory training in: a) Fire safety b) Intermediate life support c) Moving and handling.
  • To participate in ongoing teaching programmes and staff development.
  • To act as an educational resource for others.
  • To encourage all staff to maintain their own professional practice and keep abreast of current developments and research.
  • To liaise with managers to ensure that educational needs are met.
  • To ensure that members of staff are conversant with and adhere to the following: a) Fire safety b) Intermediate life support c) Moving and handling.
  • Ensure that all members of staff are conversant with and adhere to: a) Policies and procedures, local, regional and national b) Correct use of equipment c) Clinical guidelines.
  • To ensure own training needs are met and maintain a development structure that will foster best practice.
  • Attend any specific clinical training that ensures clinical competency is maintained.
  • Complete reports and records as required by managers e.g. incidents/accidents.
  • Deal with complaints in accordance with local and Trust policy.
  • Maintain effective communication with all service users and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Liaise with outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Ensure Clinical Governance standards are met with partnership of unit manager/s.
