Job Summary
The Manager is the designated person in charge of the Home and is responsible for the day‑to‑day management of the Home, the standards and quality of care practice, and liaison with other professionals and support services. The post has 24‑hour ongoing responsibility for assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of care programmes, implementation of quality assurance/control methods with the Operations Manager/Directors, ensuring compliance with infection control legislation, and sourcing suitable staff training.
Professional
- Exercise leadership in the Home: direct, supervise and assist in training and development of all staff.
- Maintain the highest standards of care, adhering to and contributing to the policies and procedures of the Home.
- Act as a counsellor to staff on care and managerial matters.
- Participate in in‑service training measures; supervise training sessions within the Home and publicise available opportunities.
- Encourage and arrange for staff to attend external courses relevant to their training needs.
- Advise the Operations Manager/Directors on relevance and implementation of care policy and practice.
- Ensure all staff adhere to the G.S.C.C Codes of Practice at all times.
- Coordinate all activities within the Home.
- Monitor and appraise staff performance, completing necessary documentation.
- Ensure good communication and cooperation with all staff, enabling them to achieve their goals as professional carers.
- Liaise and cooperate with medical and paramedical staff on matters of client care and management.
- Assess prospective clients prior to admission to formulate the basis of the care programme.
- Participate actively in quality control initiatives, encouraging staff to contribute positively.
- Undertake periods of care practice involving direct client care to monitor quality of care.
- Develop a common code of practice in the Home through innovation and improvement of techniques based on individualised care principles.
Management
- Produce a weekly report covering client health status, general welfare and staffing levels.
- Take full responsibility for the Home and its property, denying access to unauthorised persons when necessary.
- Initiate and authorise recruitment procedures, interview and appoint staff up to Senior Carer, participate in recruitment of Deputy Manager, and recruit catering, domestic and administrative staff.
- Arrange induction of new staff to the Home’s environment, introducing them to their particular duties.
- Ensure staffing levels are maintained by publishing rotas in advance and accounting for absences such as holidays and sickness.
- Direct and supervise all subordinate staff, ensuring adherence to dress and discipline regulations.
- Inspect the Home’s safety, arrange repairs and notify necessary measures via the administrator, safeguarding welfare and safety of staff, clients and visitors.
- Accurately record, update and distribute client records, monthly staffing returns and information requested by the CQC, Operations Manager and Directors.
- Strive to keep client occupancy levels near maximum by taking direct measures to attract positive attention to the Home.
- Attend meetings with Local Authority representatives as needed, representing the Home in the Directors’ absence.
Administrative
- Liaise with the Directors/Head Office with regard to:
- Monthly budgets and client fees.
- Assessment and allocation of beds.
- Employment and dismissal of staff.
- Ongoing staff appraisal, supervision, training and development.
- Receive complaints, providing reports of the outcome and action taken for the Operations Managers and Directors.
- Set initial client fees in line with the Home’s guidelines.
- Organise and coordinate social, recreational and social functions and outings.
- Ensure that all Home documentation is completed correctly and in accordance with legislation, policy and procedure.
