Job Overview
We are seeking to recruit a Transport Planner to join our busy and expanding Transport Team.
The successful candidate will report directly to the Transport & Logistics Manager and will be responsible for managing and coordinating the day-to-day operations of the company’s fleet across the UK and Republic of Ireland.
This role requires close liaison with drivers, subcontractors, customers, and internal departments to ensure the efficient, compliant, and cost-effective delivery of transport services while maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Transport Planning & Resource Management
- Plan and allocate drivers, vehicles, and subcontractors to routes and customer loads.
- Manage daily transport schedules and ensure effective deployment of resources.
- Issue daily operational instructions and communicate work requirements to drivers and subcontractors.
- Ensure maximum utilisation of fleet and driver resources in a cost-effective manner.
- Coordinate transport cover and driver availability for the following day’s operations.
- Ensure all planned work is completed and effectively handed over between shifts.
- Operational Performance
- Monitor delivery schedules and proactively reduce late deliveries and missed customer time slots.
- Maximise driver hours through effective forward planning and back-loading opportunities.
- Identify and implement opportunities for transport cost savings and operational efficiencies.
- Work collaboratively with drivers and operational teams to ensure service delivery targets are achieved.
- Ensure drivers have the correct documentation and information required to complete assigned work.
- Maintain regular communication with drivers, subcontractors, and customers.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with all key stakeholders.
- Ensure a high level of customer service is delivered at all times.
- Respond promptly and professionally to operational issues and customer enquiries.
- Compliance & Legislative Requirements
- Brief and debrief drivers in line with company procedures.
- Ensure compliance with Working Time Directive (WTD), Driver Hours Regulations, and Tachograph legislation.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Road Haulage and Transport legislation.
- Monitor driver compliance and ensure company and legal requirements are adhered to.
- Support company compliance objectives and transport audits as required.
- Systems & Administration
- Accurately update and maintain Transport Management Systems (TMS).
- Ensure transport records, schedules, and operational data are maintained to a high standard.
- Produce reports and operational information as required by management.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the responsibilities of the role.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a Transport Planning, Logistics, or similar operational role.
- Previous experience using a Transport Management System (TMS).
- Strong transport planning expertise within a fast-paced and demanding environment.
- Excellent decision-making skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Knowledge of Driver Hours Regulations, Road Transport Directive, and transport compliance requirements.
- Good geographical knowledge of the UK and Republic of Ireland.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Professional and customer-focused approach.
- Excellent organisational and multitasking skills.
- Strong IT proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
- Experience working within a large-scale logistics or haulage operation.
- Knowledge of fleet utilisation and transport optimisation techniques.
