Role Summary
The HR Generalist and EHS program plays a key role in supporting daily HR and Health & Safety operations within a fastâpaced manufacturing environment. Working closely with production leadership, functional managers, and employees, this role ensures effective workforce management, strong employee relations, and a safe, compliant workplace. This position provides handsâon HR support across staffing, employee relations, payroll, compliance, and training. It also carries responsibility for coordinating and enhancing Health & Safety processes across the Hemel Hempstead site, supporting a workforce of 50â100 employees. While primarily siteâfocused, the role offers opportunities to contribute to regional and divisional initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruitment & Onboarding
- Manage endâtoâend recruitment for manufacturing roles, including job postings, candidate screening, trade test coordination, and interview scheduling.
- Create requisitions, post vacancies, coordinate interviews, and conduct reference checks.
- Lead onboarding and induction programmes, ensuring completion of mandatory training and documentation.
- HR Operations & Employee Relations
- Maintain accurate and GDPRâcompliant personnel files.
- Provide guidance to supervisors on disciplinary processes, investigations, and performance improvement plans.
- Support shift planning, attendance tracking, absence management, and timekeeping accuracy.
- Assist with the creation, review, and implementation of HR policies and initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with UK employment law and company policies.
- Maintain accurate employee data in Talent Hub and conduct periodic data audits.
- Conduct audits of payroll, benefits, and HR programmes, recommending corrective actions.
- Prepare monthly payroll changes for submission to Finance.
- Support compensation administration and performance appraisal processes.
- Maintain HR metrics including turnover, recruitment lead times, training compliance, and absenteeism.
- Coordinate employee development programmes, including skills matrices and competency training.
- Provide timely responses to employee HR queries and promote a positive, engaged shopâfloor culture.
- Organise wellbeing initiatives and employee engagement events, including community volunteering activities.
- Prepare and distribute internal communications.
- Health & Safety (H&S)
- Lead the annual H&S calendar, including audits and health surveillance, in collaboration with the regional EH&S Advisor.
- Coordinate and update risk assessments, method statements, COSHH assessments, and workstation evaluations.
- Support the Production Leadership team in implementing safe systems of work.
- Maintain H&S documentation, including policies, machine safety checks, PPE records, maintenance logs, and training files.
- Coordinate mandatory H&S training and promote a proactive safety culture.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections across production, warehouse, workshop, and loading areas.
- General
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aligned with business priorities.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience in an HR Generalist or HR Officer role within manufacturing, warehousing, or industrial environments.
- Degree, Apprenticeship, or CIPD qualification.
- Strong working knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practices.
- Understanding of Health & Safety standards (HSE guidelines, COSHH, RIDDOR).
- NEBOSH Level 2 or 3 (or willingness to obtain) is highly advantageous.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills across all organisational levels.
- Ability to manage HR and H&S responsibilities in a highâactivity, shiftâbased environment.
- Proficiency with Workday and Microsoft Office.
