This is a full-time temporary contract for 6 months, based at HMP Wandsworth. This is a senior-level opportunity within the Probation Service, offering the chance to lead a team, support operational delivery, and contribute directly to public protection and reducing reoffending within a custodial environment.
The post is paying:
- £26.02 per hour PAYE
- £34.26 per hour Umbrella
Overview of the Role:
As a Senior Probation Officer (SPO), you will take on a leadership role, managing staff and overseeing the delivery of high-quality offender management. You will ensure that operational standards are met, policies are implemented effectively, and that the team contributes to reducing reoffending and protecting the public. The role requires strong leadership, organisational skills, and a thorough understanding of probation practice, risk management, and multi-agency working.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Managing a team to deliver effective Offender Management and achieve high standards of public protection
- Providing day-to-day leadership, performance management, and support to staff
- Ensuring effective allocation, monitoring, and completion of work within the team
- Contributing to multi-agency public protection arrangements and partnership working
- Reviewing casework and providing feedback to maintain quality and compliance
- Supporting change management initiatives and driving improvements in quality and efficiency
- Ensuring implementation of policies, procedures, and National Standards
- Maintaining accurate records using NDelius and OASys
- Promoting and ensuring compliance with Health & Safety policies
- Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal teams and external agencies
- Championing equality, diversity, and inclusion
- Supporting the wider operational objectives of the Probation Service
- Undertaking additional duties appropriate to the role as required
Person Specification:
- A recognised Probation Officer qualification (PQF Graduate Diploma/ Honours Degree in Community Justice with Level 5 Diploma in Probation Practice, or equivalent recognised qualification)
- Experience working within a recognised provider of probation services within the last 5 years
- Management experience, including day-to-day staff and performance management
- Experience contributing to public protection through multi-agency working and case review
- Experience of managing or supporting change and improving service delivery
- Strong knowledge of offender management, risk assessment, and public protection frameworks
- Experience using NDelius and OASys systems
- Understanding of Health & Safety legislation in the workplace
- Knowledge of victim engagement considerations
- Strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across agencies
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends
- Strong knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, Probation Service, legislation, and National Standards
- Commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion
