This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-performing in-house legal team at a time of unprecedented transformation across the energy sector. The organisation plays a critical role in protecting energy consumers, overseeing markets, and supporting the UK’s transition to net zero.

You will join the Office of the General Counsel, providing strategic, solutions-focused legal advice across a wide range of complex, high-profile and fast-moving policy and regulatory matters. This is meaningful work with real impact on consumers, markets and environmental outcomes.

Summary of job

  • Contract: Fixed Term Contract – 12 months
  • Locations: London, Glasgow or Cardiff (hybrid working – average one day per week in the office)

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Own and lead legal workstreams, working collaboratively and delivering as part of a wider team.
  • Provide strategic, high-quality, timely and solutions-focused legal advice on complex and novel issues within a regulatory context.
  • Advise on public law, regulatory and policy matters across a range of specialist hubs, which may include retail pricing, enforcement, networks, systems, delivery of renewable schemes, or strategic infrastructure programmes.
  • Support the effective management and mitigation of legal risk across the organisation.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal policy teams, technical specialists and corporate services.
  • Manage key external stakeholder relationships, including government departments, regulators, industry participants and other bodies.
  • Ensure value for money in the use of external legal counsel where required.
  • Contribute to corporate, budgetary and wider management responsibilities as needed.

The role offers exposure to high-profile projects including consumer protection, price controls, competition matters, energy market reform, infrastructure development and net zero delivery.

Person Specification

Qualifications:

  • Qualified barrister or solicitor (England & Wales), or advocate/solicitor (Scotland); OR
  • Overseas qualified lawyer with evidence of preparedness to sit the SQE or BTT and some UK post-qualification practice; OR
  • Chartered Legal Executive (with a Qualifying Law Degree, GDL/CPE, or CILEx Level 6 foundation subjects as specified).

Experience & Skills:

  • Demonstrable sound legal judgement and ability to analyse and advise on complex and novel legal issues (lead criteria).
  • Experience (at any stage of career) in one or more of the following areas: Economic regulation, Consumer protection, Commercial or complex projects/procurement, Public/administrative law or regulatory litigation (particularly within government, regulatory bodies or highly regulated sectors).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex legal analysis clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Resilient and able to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
