Reuters wants an experienced journalist with impeccable news judgment to manage the daily, breaking news file in Europe across all formats — text, video and pictures. The Deputy Breaking & Daily News Editor will help oversee our response to breaking news events, from first snaps, pictures and live video coverage to fast, additional content such as personal stories and explainers. They are also responsible for daily news coverage, from set-piece events like elections and summits to viral-worthy, slice-of-life stories.
As Deputy Breaking News & Daily Editor, you will help oversee integrated text-visuals breaking news hubs stretching from Moscow to London, operating across borders, working in more than a dozen languages. Proficiency in a European language other than English would be an advantage. You will have a deep knowledge of the region and prioritise stories that matter most to clients, with a sharp focus on speed and accuracy. You will have experience in dealing with staff safety in hostile environments and have a strong track record in people management, including hiring and developing talent. You will be expected to make quick editorial decisions under pressure and to understand the needs of our three main client groups: the London Stock Exchange Group’s global network, which includes several large local-language services; agency media, which includes the world's top broadcasters, newspapers and digital outlets; and Reuters’ own digital readers on the app, reuters.com and social media accounts. The role will be based in London and report to the Breaking & Daily News Editor.
About the Role
- Implement editorial priorities for breaking and daily news across all formats, in conjunction with regional editor and bureau chiefs.
- Oversee a cross-format team to deliver fast, accurate, and impactful coverage.
- Ensure stories meet Reuters’ standards and client expectations across platforms.
- Make rapid editorial decisions under time pressure; run operations in editor’s absence.
- Serve as a key link between regional and global editors to shape coverage and strategy.
- Mentor and coach staff, fostering a high-performance and inclusive newsroom culture.
- Encourage innovation and enhancements in breaking news workflows.
About You
- Proven experience in breaking news journalism, ideally in a global news organisation.
- Strong editorial judgement and decision-making under pressure.
- Experience running breaking news in either text or visuals journalism, with a good understanding of the other disciplines.
- Experience of dealing with staff safety in hostile environments.
- Experience managing diverse teams, sometimes across locations.
- Understanding of AI tools and their application in newsroom workflows.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills.
- Commitment to Reuters Trust Principles of independence, integrity, and freedom from bias.
