Referment is working with a financial technology business providing global payments and foreign exchange services to organisations with complex cross-border operations.
As a Transaction Monitoring Analyst, you'll investigate potentially suspicious activity across its payments platform. The work goes beyond reviewing alerts: you'll assess customer behaviour and source-of-funds information, build clear case narratives and decide when a concern needs escalation.
You'll work within the Transaction Monitoring team and alongside Financial Crime and MLRO colleagues, with regular collaboration across Compliance, Operations, Risk and Onboarding. Alongside your investigation workload, you'll use transactional data to identify patterns and suggest improvements to monitoring controls and case-handling processes.
The Role
- Review and investigate alerts covering money laundering, fraud, sanctions and other financial crime risks, applying a risk-based approach to each case.
- Analyse customer activity, transaction patterns and source-of-funds information to distinguish unusual behaviour from potentially suspicious activity.
- Document decisions and supporting evidence clearly, managing investigations within agreed service levels and regulatory requirements.
- Draft internal suspicious activity reports and elevate higher-risk cases through the appropriate governance channels, supporting external SAR submissions with Financial Crime and MLRO colleagues where needed.
- Use transactional data for thematic reviews, trend analysis and management information, identifying emerging risks and gaps in controls.
- Contribute to better alert quality and investigation standards, including testing and tuning monitoring controls where appropriate.
What We're Looking For
- Relevant experience in transaction monitoring, AML, financial crime, compliance operations or a related risk function; the role is aimed at candidates with around one to two years of experience.
- Practical experience investigating transaction monitoring alerts and recording clear, evidence-based decisions.
- Experience preparing internal SARs or escalating suspicious activity through appropriate governance channels.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to manipulate and interpret data to support investigations and identify trends.
- The judgement to work independently, manage competing case priorities and recognise when escalation is needed.
Useful Additional Experience
Excel skills such as pivot tables, lookups and filtering would be helpful. Experience in payments, FX, banking, fintech or e-money is welcome, as is exposure to monitoring-rule tuning, alert optimisation or thematic reviews.
This could suit a transaction monitoring or financial crime analyst who already handles investigations and wants to combine casework with data-led improvements to monitoring effectiveness.
