Referment is working with an entrepreneurial commercial law firm whose clients range from investors and founders to high-growth companies and institutions across the UK and beyond. The firm advises on corporate transactions, commercial property and related matters, often with cross-jurisdictional dimensions, and is now looking for an ambitious commercial property lawyer to head up its renewables practice.
This is a partner/director-level appointment, full time and based in the firm's Edinburgh office with an agile working arrangement. The commercial property team currently numbers four β a partner, a senior associate and two consultants β covering Scottish and English matters, and you would be instrumental in growing it.
The Role
You will be the main point of contact for corporate and commercial clients on all renewables matters. That means advising developers and landowners on the acquisition of wind, hydro and solar sites, and advising organisations on renewable energy projects across hydro, wave, tidal and onshore and offshore wind.
Practice-building is central rather than incidental. You will be responsible for building and developing the renewables practice, and will be expected to spend a significant amount of time seeking out opportunities and pursuing them with energy. You will also assist the corporate teams in Scotland and London on all aspects of commercial property transactions.
As a partner or director you will be given autonomy and leeway to develop your own ideas, professional interests and career path, with the chance to travel within the UK to meet clients and develop business. The work is varied and demanding: you will need to manage a full workload, meet tight deadlines and give pragmatic, solution-driven commercial advice with quick turnaround.
What We're Looking For
- At least seven years' PQE in commercial property matters, with an enthusiastic, self-starting approach.
- Preferably Scottish qualified, or dual-qualified in Scotland and England.
- Experience advising developers and landowners on wind, hydro and solar site acquisitions, and on renewable energy projects.
- Strong business development skills and a genuine appetite for building a practice and client relationships.
- A friendly, confident manner with clients and the resilience to handle pressure and competing deadlines.
This could suit a senior commercial property lawyer or sitting partner from a Scottish or UK practice who wants genuine ownership of a renewables platform, or an energy-sector specialist ready to step into a leadership role with real autonomy.
