Referment is working with a financial technology business serving financial advisers through investment platform services, model portfolios and financial planning software. Its products support advisers in managing clients' financial plans and investments, including retirement planning.
This permanent role sits in the second line of defence within the Risk and Compliance team, reporting directly to the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer. You'll take responsibility for the design, delivery, tracking and reporting of the Compliance Monitoring Plan, combining hands-on assurance work with committee and Board reporting.
The remit covers the full monitoring cycle: deciding which risks need attention, testing controls, evidencing findings and following remediation through to completion. You'll work with business stakeholders and connect monitoring outcomes with the wider risk and compliance programme.
The Role
Compliance Monitoring Plan
- Own the design, maintenance and delivery of the Compliance Monitoring Plan, using risk-based prioritisation to determine the review programme.
- Plan and execute compliance monitoring reviews, control testing and sample-based assurance work across the business.
- Engage business stakeholders throughout monitoring activities to understand processes and assess how controls operate.
- Connect monitoring work with other second-line activities, including risk assessments, risk registers, regulatory change and incident investigations.
- Conduct compliance surveillance and thematic reviews to identify issues, control gaps and instances of non‑compliance.
- Monitor financial crime controls as part of the wider monitoring programme.
Findings, Remediation and Reporting
- Track remediation actions arising from monitoring findings and follow them through to completion.
- Prepare papers and reports for the Risk and Compliance Committee and Board, explaining findings, recurring themes and remediation progress.
- Coordinate the review and sign-off of monitoring outcomes through relevant governance forums, including the Risk and Compliance Committee.
- Schedule and coordinate third-party thematic reviews and assurance work.
What We're Looking For
- At least six years' experience in compliance monitoring roles within an FCA-regulated investment firm.
- Demonstrable experience designing or operating a Compliance Monitoring Plan, including risk-based prioritisation and remediation tracking.
- Proven experience conducting monitoring reviews, testing and thematic assurance work, with the ability to identify, evidence and escalated control gaps.
- Experience preparing monitoring reports and papers for committee and Board audiences, turning findings into clear themes and recommendations.
- Strong working knowledge of COBS, SYSC, PRIN and Consumer Duty, including PRIN 2A.
- Familiarity with MiFID II, SM&CR, CASS and financial crime frameworks, including AML, KYB and DDQ.
- Experience engaging with the FCA.
- Excellent written communication skills and the ability to prepare Board-level documentation.
- The ability to work independently and at pace within a structured programme environment.
Desirable Experience
- A background in internal audit, quality assurance or second- and third-line testing methodologies.
- Experience within a model portfolio service provider or investment platform business.
- Familiarity with platform governance.
- Familiarity with third-party oversight frameworks.
- Experience using compliance software and tools.
- Professional qualifications such as ICA or CISI are desirable, but not essential.
Benefits
The package includes a pension scheme, annual leave plus bank holidays, a non-contractual bonus scheme, insurance plans, funding for relevant professional qualifications and memberships, and wellbeing support. Flexible hours are available depending on team requirements.
This could suit an experienced investment-sector compliance monitoring professional who wants to combine practical testing with responsibility for the monitoring programme, remediation oversight and governance reporting.
