An established engineering business specialising in automation and robotic solutions is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing design team. The company designs and manufactures special purpose machinery across multiple sectors, including automotive, medical, healthcare, and plastics.
This is a senior, hands-on design role with responsibility for leading projects from concept through to customer handover, working closely with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to deliver high-quality, compliant, and commercially viable solutions.
The Role
- Lead mechanical design projects from order acceptance to installation and handover
- Own the design, detailing, and delivery of complex special purpose machinery
- Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders
- Ensure projects are delivered to plan, on time, and within budget
- Provide technical leadership to engineers, fitters, and electricians
Key Responsibilities
- Attend project handovers and commit to delivery plans and budgets
- Produce and review mechanical designs using 3D CAD
- Lead design reviews and obtain customer design approval
- Produce accurate BOMs and manage supplier negotiations
- Support electrical design and build phases
- Compile technical documentation including risk assessments, manuals, and construction files
- Lead site installation and commissioning support
- Conduct machine risk assessments and ensure compliance with relevant standards and directives
- Support warranty issues and continuous improvement initiatives
Candidate Profile
- Degree/HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or similar
- 7–10 years’ experience in mechanical design, ideally within automation or special purpose machinery
- Expert user of 3D CAD (Solid Edge preferred; SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo also considered)
- Strong understanding of machine safety, CE marking, and relevant standards
- Commercially aware, self-motivated, and solution-focused
- Strong communication skills and experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
- Willing to travel within the UK and overseas when required
