A specialist aerospace engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Contract Mechanical Design Engineer to support a live avionics integration and aircraft modification programme on a regional/narrow-body aircraft platform. This role will focus on the mechanical and structural integration of avionics equipment within a regulated aerospace design environment, supporting installation design, drawing production, systems integration, and aircraft modification activities in accordance with UK aviation approval frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Design of structural and mechanical provisions for avionics equipment installations.
- Development of equipment mounting arrangements, trays, brackets, panels and supporting structure.
- Mechanical integration of avionics and electrical systems into existing aircraft platforms.
- Coordination with avionics/electrical engineers to ensure installation and interface requirements are achieved.
- Creation of 2D/3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings and installation drawings.
- Production of mechanical assemblies, installation packages and drawing trees.
- Support routing and integration activities for associated wiring and electrical equipment.
- Support manufacturing and production teams during build and installation phases.
- Assist with engineering substantiation activities including: Weight & Balance, Human Factors, Structural/Stress assessments.
- Participate in design reviews including PDR/CDR activities.
- Manage engineering changes and update documentation accordingly.
- Support aircraft surveys and installation activities where required.
Candidate Requirements
- Minimum 3 years’ experience within a UK CAA or EASA Part 21J aerospace design environment.
- Strong background in mechanical/structural design for aircraft modification programmes.
- Previous experience integrating avionics or electrical systems onto aircraft platforms is essential.
- Good understanding of Part 21J and/or Part 21G approval environments.
- Proficient with 2D and 3D CAD packages such as: Autodesk AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or equivalent aerospace CAD tools.
- Familiarity with OEM aircraft documentation, drawings and modification procedures.
- Previous design signatory/checking experience is advantageous.
- Experience on legacy regional or commercial aircraft programmes would be beneficial.
Contract Details
- Immediate start preferred.
- 6 month contract.
- UK-based onsite role.
- Outside IR35 potential depending on engagement structure.
