A fast-growing, technology-driven consumer platform is looking for an Engineering Manager to join its expanding Technology function. The business operates multiple direct-to-consumer brands and builds highly bespoke software across ecommerce, internal tooling, and operational systems. Technology plays a central role in enabling personalised products used by a large and growing customer base. This is a hybrid role, with regular in-office collaboration in London and flexibility to work remotely part of the week.
As an Engineering Manager, you’ll lead one or more cross-functional engineering teams, balancing people leadership, technical direction, and delivery. You’ll work at the intersection of product and engineering, partnering closely with Product Managers, Designers, and senior stakeholders to ensure teams build high-quality, scalable software that aligns with business goals. This role suits someone who enjoys developing engineers, improving systems, and owning outcomes end to end.
What the Engineering Manager will be responsible for:
- End-to-end ownership
- Accountability for the delivery, reliability, and operation of your team’s services
- Ensuring testing, observability, security, and infrastructure are embedded into development
- Promoting a “you build it, you run it” mindset
- Driving continuous improvement in scalability, stability, and cost efficiency
People leadership & team development:
- Managing and mentoring engineers across one or more teams
- Running regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and development planning
- Creating a culture of psychological safety, learning, and collaboration
- Supporting engineers’ growth while maintaining high standards
Technical leadership:
- Setting and maintaining technical direction and architectural quality
- Making pragmatic trade-offs between speed, quality, and long-term maintainability
- Supporting hands-on technical work when needed, particularly during discovery
- Championing best practices in design, testing, and code quality
Delivery & ways of working:
- Partnering with Product to align delivery with business priorities
- Driving predictable, high-quality delivery
- Continuously improving engineering processes and workflows
- Using data and metrics to inform decisions
Product & stakeholder collaboration:
- Working closely with Product and Design from discovery through delivery
- Contributing to roadmap planning and prioritisation
- Representing engineering in cross-functional discussions
What we’re looking for in an Engineering Manager:
- Proven experience leading or managing software engineers
- Strong technical background (backend, full-stack, or platform)
- Experience owning systems end to end, including operations and infrastructure
- Solid understanding of cloud environments (AWS or similar) and CI/CD
- Strong grasp of modern engineering practices, testing, observability, and security
- Excellent communication and coaching skills
- Comfortable making architectural decisions in ambiguous environments
Nice to have:
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools
- Familiarity with Python-based stacks (e.g. Python, Flask, MySQL, React, TypeScript)
- Background in ecommerce or product-led businesses
- Experience scaling systems with cost and performance in mind
- Knowledge of application or network security
