Are you ready to step into a senior engineering role where your designs don’t just stay on paper—but scale into real, high-volume production and deliver real-world impact? We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and development of complex electro-mechanical systems for highly regulated, high-performance industries. This is a hands-on technical leadership role offering full ownership of engineering delivery, innovation, and technical direction from concept through to high-volume manufacturing.
Experience designing for high-volume manufacturing environments is essential for this role.
About the Role
As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take technical ownership of complex engineering programmes, leading them from initial concept through to production, validation, testing, and customer delivery.
- Lead the design, development, and documentation of complex electro-mechanical systems
- Own technical delivery from concept through to prototype, validation, and high-volume production
- Collaborate closely with electrical, software, and systems engineers to deliver fully integrated solutions
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship across engineering teams
- Drive innovation while solving complex mechanical engineering challenges in regulated environments
- Ensure all designs are optimised for manufacturability, scalability, cost efficiency, and production robustness
You will act as a key technical authority within Mechanical Design, influencing engineering decisions across major projects and ensuring robust execution through gated development processes. You will also work closely with suppliers, manufacturing teams, and customers to ensure designs are not only technically excellent but fully production-ready at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver robust mechanical designs for electro-mechanical systems in high-regulated, high-volume environments (e.g. motors, powertrains, EV systems)
- Produce detailed CAD models, drawings, and BOMs using SolidWorks
- Lead design reviews, risk assessments, and technical validation activities
- Ensure strong Design for Manufacturability (DfM) and Design for Assembly (DfA), with a strong focus on high-volume production readiness
- Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing teams to ensure designs are scalable, cost-effective, and production robust
- Lead root cause analysis and complex technical problem solving
- Mentor and develop engineers across the business, driving technical excellence and best practice
Skills & Experience Required
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- Extensive experience in mechanical design of complex electro-mechanical systems
- Proven experience designing for high-volume manufacturing (ESSENTIAL)
- Experience with complex moving mechanical systems (gearboxes, actuators, powertrains, rotating machinery, turbomachinery)
- Strong SolidWorks CAD modelling expertise
- Experience within regulated industries such as automotive, aerospace, defence or similar
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, tolerancing, assemblies, and manufacturing processes at scale
- Proven leadership experience and ability to mentor engineers
- Strong communication, problem-solving and organisational skills
Why Apply?
- Take ownership of high-impact, technically complex engineering programmes
- See your designs move from concept into real-world high-volume production
- Lead and shape the direction of a growing, innovative engineering team
- Work in an environment that values innovation, quality, and technical excellence
- Play a key role in developing next-generation electro-mechanical systems
Benefits
- Generous company bonus scheme
