Are you the type of engineer who sees a problem and immediately starts thinking of three different ways to solve it? Do you enjoy taking an idea from a blank sheet of paper through design, build, testing and implementation? Are you equally comfortable creating CAD models, working with suppliers, troubleshooting machinery on the shop floor and getting hands-on during commissioning? If so, this could be the perfect opportunity.

We are working with an innovative and rapidly growing manufacturing business that is investing heavily in its engineering capability. They are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys thinking outside the box, challenging conventional approaches and taking ownership of projects from concept through to delivery. This is not a role where you'll sit behind a desk producing drawings all day. You'll be involved in every stage of the engineering process, helping to design, develop, improve and implement machinery, equipment and manufacturing processes that have a direct impact on the business.

The Role

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will become a key part of a highly collaborative engineering team responsible for solving complex manufacturing challenges and developing innovative solutions. You'll have the freedom to think creatively, test ideas and take projects from concept through to reality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop bespoke machinery, equipment and manufacturing systems.
  • Generate innovative concepts and turn ideas into practical engineering solutions.
  • Take ownership of projects from initial concept through design, build, testing and implementation.
  • Work closely with manufacturing teams to improve processes, efficiency and reliability.
  • Get hands-on with prototype development, installation, commissioning and fault finding.
  • Support machinery upgrades, modifications and continuous improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and external partners to develop new products and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Investigate root causes of engineering challenges and develop robust long-term solutions.
  • Contribute to the future direction of engineering and manufacturing within the business.

About You

We're looking for someone who enjoys engineering in its broadest sense. Someone who is naturally curious, enjoys solving problems and isn't afraid to challenge existing ways of doing things. You'll likely have:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong 3D CAD skills, ideally using SolidWorks.
  • A practical, hands-on approach to engineering and problem solving.
  • Experience designing mechanical systems, machinery or manufacturing equipment.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, laser cutting, injection moulding or automated assembly.
  • Understanding of mechanical systems including actuators, pneumatics, bearings, drives and motion control equipment.
  • The confidence to work independently whilst also collaborating effectively within a team.
  • A willingness to get involved in all aspects of engineering projects, from concept generation through to workshop support and implementation.

Desirable Experience

  • PLC programming or coding experience.
  • Experience within a manufacturing, automation or production environment.
  • Product development and prototyping experience.
  • Exposure to continuous improvement and process optimisation activities.

What's On Offer?

  • The opportunity to work in a genuinely innovative environment where new ideas are encouraged.
  • A role with significant variety and ownership.
  • Exposure to every stage of the engineering lifecycle.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Share scheme and equity opportunities.
  • 25 days holiday plus Bank Holidays.
  • Healthcare cash plan.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
  • Free breakfast, lunch, refreshments and snacks on site.
  • Ongoing training, development and career progression opportunities.
  • A collaborative culture where engineers are empowered to make a real difference.

If you're a creative engineer who enjoys finding solutions, getting stuck into challenges and seeing your ideas become reality, we'd love to hear from you.
