A rapidly growing UK control systems integrator is expanding its engineering team due to a sustained increase in project demand across energy storage and critical infrastructure. With dozens of live projects and long-term repeat clients, this role offers the opportunity to work on technically complex systems from initial design through to commissioning and handover. This position will suit an engineer who enjoys owning delivery, working across disciplines, and solving real engineering problems rather than maintaining existing systems.

The Role

As a Project Engineer, you will deliver control and automation solutions across the full project lifecycle, working closely with clients, internal engineering teams, and external stakeholders. You will be responsible for ensuring all work is technically robust, compliant, and delivered to programme and budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Engineering
  • Understand customer requirements and translate them into compliant technical solutions
  • Interpret and apply relevant British, international, and client standards
  • Design PLC, SCADA, HMI, and communications architectures
  • Produce system schematics, process diagrams, state diagrams, and data point schedules
  • Design industrial communications networks (Ethernet, fibre, serial, etc.)
  • Work closely with CAD engineers on control panel layouts and hardware integration
  • Produce calculations (power, heating, loading) and compliance matrices
  • Software Development
    • PLC programming (ladder logic primarily; structured text beneficial)
    • SCADA and HMI development in line with internal coding standards
    • Development of test tools and supporting software as required
  • Testing & Commissioning
    • Create and execute FAT and SAT documentation
    • Carry out testing with internal and customer witnesses
    • Diagnose, log, and resolve defects
    • Support commissioning and site activities where required
  • Delivery & Documentation
    • Support procurement and supplier engagement
    • Produce O&M manuals, as-built drawings, spares lists, and H&S files
    • Support warranty activities and issue resolution

    What They’re Looking For

    • Strong controls / automation engineering background (design-focused)
    • Experience delivering projects end-to-end, not just coding or maintenance
    • Solid technical fundamentals and problem-solving mindset
    • Comfortable working with ambiguity and adapting solutions
    • Strong communication skills and ownership mentality

    Benefits

    • Office-based role (Derbyshire) – 5 days per week
    • Core hours approx. 08:30–16:30 (flexibility either side)
    • Early finish typically on Fridays
    • Holidays: 22 days bank holidays, plus Christmas shutdown
    • Other benefits include:
    • Pool vehicles for site travel
    • Cycle-to-work scheme
    • £500 annual flexible wellbeing/allowance benefit
    • Sick pay scheme
    • Discretionary bonus potential
