Key Responsibilities of an HLTA

  • Deliver whole-class learning activities under the direction of a qualified teacher
  • Support pupils with diverse needs, fostering independence and engagement
  • Assist in lesson planning, curriculum delivery, and pupil assessment
  • Manage classroom behaviour and implement individual behaviour plans
  • Collaborate with external agencies and support school trips and enrichment activities
  • Provide specialist support in areas such as speech therapy, literacy, or SEN
  • Mentor other support staff and contribute to staff development

What We're Looking For in an HLTA

  • HLTA qualification or equivalent (e.g. NVQ Level 3)
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a teaching or learning support role
  • Strong literacy and numeracy skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage whole-class responsibilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of the national curriculum and relevant learning strategies
  • Commitment to safeguarding and child protection

Ideal HLTA Candidates Will Also Demonstrate

  • Confidence in managing challenging behaviour
  • Experience with IEPs and individual learning plans
  • Familiarity with ICT tools to support learning
