Who are we? The West Midlands Growth Company (WMGC) is the region’s economic development delivery organisation. From April 2026, we will lead the delivery of regionally commissioned economic development activity aligned to the West Midlands Growth Plan, working in partnership with the West Midlands Combined Authority and local authorities. We are building a sharper, business-focused organisation that attracts investment, supports high-growth companies and drives measurable economic impact. The Role

As our new High Growth Consultant, you’ll join a forward thinking, collaborative team that values fresh ideas and innovation. This is a genuine opportunity to take ownership of meaningful projects, influence decision making, and help shape the future direction of the business.

You’ll be involved in:

  • Lead a portfolio of high potential scaleups, working directly with founders, CEOs, and boards to diagnose challenges and accelerate growth.
  • Provide strategic commercial insight across areas such as strategy, governance, finance, leadership, innovation, and market access.
  • Shape and deliver high growth programmes, contributing to intervention models, cohort selection, and continuous improvement aligned with regional economic priorities.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Offering specialist expertise in an area such as governance, fundraising, people/organisation design, innovation, business development, or export.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the West Midlands business ecosystem, including investors, universities, catapults, corporates, and government agencies.
  • Drive economic impact, ensuring interventions lead to measurable outcomes such as job creation, productivity gains, and inward investment.
  • Provide robust reporting and analysis to evidence performance, ensuring high standards of governance, transparency, and accountability.
  • Work across public, private, and academic stakeholders to remove systemic barriers to growth, influencing partners to unlock conditions for high growth businesses to thrive.
  • Support businesses with internationalisation and export growth, helping them develop and execute global expansion strategies through targeted ecosystem introductions.
  • Provide market and sector intelligence, identifying emerging trends, risks, and opportunities to inform regional policy and strategic decision making.
  • Contribute to building and strengthening sector clusters and the wider scaleup ecosystem, fostering collaboration and shared capability across priority industries.

What You’ll Bring

Essential:

  • Significant senior-level business experience leading high-growth and scale-up businesses.
  • Strong track record of working with founders, CEOs, and boards on complex growth and transformation challenges.
  • Demonstrable experience engaging with investors and growth finance markets.
  • Proven ability to translate economic strategy into practical, high-impact interventions.
  • Strong understanding of a business lifecycle.
  • Commercially astute: Balances public value with private-sector growth realities.

Desirable:

  • Relevant Degree or Postgraduate qualification or professional accreditation in business, finance, or leadership.
  • An industry sector background in advanced manufacturing, professional services, life sciences or low carbon, digital tech and creative.
  • Strong understanding of the West Midlands business support ecosystem.
  • Strong industry networks.
  • Experience of delivering business support to high growth businesses through Advisory, Non-executive roles.
  • Non-executive, board advisory, or investment committee experience.
