Job Description

Transport Controller 

Location: FelthamContract Type: PermanentSalary: £30,000 Hours: Monday to Friday, 09:00am - 18:00pm

About the role

As a Transport Controller, you will be the first point of contact for all UK domestic network shipping orders and enquiries. You will ensure that shipments are managed efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively, delivering the highest quality service in the industry. This role is pivotal in maintaining operational excellence and supporting the organisation’s commitment to compliance and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end shipment processes for clinical trial medicines, research samples, and healthcare products.
  • Plan and optimise driver routes for timely and cost-effective deliveries.
  • Maintain vehicle service schedules and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Coordinate with internal teams (Cold Chain, Warehouse, Sales, Customer Experience) to streamline operations.
  • Monitor shipment progress and update milestones in the Transport Management System (TMS).
  • Handle outsourcing of transport solutions and manage subcontractor performance.
  • Liaise with suppliers to negotiate competitive pricing.
  • Oversee fuel card usage, insurance policies, parking fines, and congestion charges.
  • Maintain accurate records of driver hours, leave, and compliance with working time regulations.
  • Ensure proper packaging and temperature control in collaboration with the Cold Chain team.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent in Maths, English, and Science.
  • Proven experience in cold chain or time-sensitive multimodal freight forwarding.
  • Essential experience in transport planning and routing.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

Desirable Knowledge

  • Handling of Controlled Drugs, DEFRA/CITES import/export regulations, and relevant licences.
  • Compliance with GDP, HMRC, MHRA, IATA, and CAA guidelines.
  • Dangerous goods regulations and airline cargo/passenger logistics.
  • Experience with active/passive temperature-controlled solutions and biological sample shipping.
  • Awareness of clinical trials logistics and multimodal shipping (air, road, sea, rail).
