Hourly Rate: £22.32 via umbrella or £17.18 via PAYE

Location: Sheffield (City-wide, hybrid – site-based 80% of the time and the rest office (S4 postcode) or WFH)

Job Type: Interim with opportunity to apply for permanent

Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week), flexitime (no weekend working)

Join our client in their team as a Repairs and Maintenance Officer, managing and delivering an effective repairs and maintenance service across council housing stock. This role is crucial in ensuring that properties are safe, compliant, and fit for occupation, focusing on disrepair claims and tenant permission requests, while providing a high standard of customer service.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Disrepair Case Management: Manage a caseload of housing disrepair cases from initial Letter of Claim through to resolution. Contact tenants, arrange inspections, and carry out property assessments. Diagnose required repairs and recommend appropriate remedial works. Raise and manage repair orders via the council's app-based systems. Liaise closely with repairs teams and respond to any technical queries. Work with the legal team, providing information, reports, and professional opinions. Prepare Part 35 compliant reports, including declarations of truth where required.
  • Permissions and Alterations: Manage tenant requests for alterations to council properties. Assess proposed works and advise tenants on requirements, including Building Control approval and Planning permission. Provide guidance throughout the process and inspect completed works.
  • Inspections and Property Assessment: Undertake site visits across the city, planning and booking inspections independently. Identify properties that are unfit for habitation and raise decant requests where necessary. Escalate complex or structural issues to surveyors as appropriate.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of building repairs, maintenance, and housing standards.
  • Experience in property inspections, defect diagnosis, and remedial solutions.
  • Ability to manage a high and varied caseload.
  • Confident customer communication skills.
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate inspection reports.
  • Good IT skills and confidence using mobile/app-based systems.
  • Understanding of legal compliance in housing repairs (or willingness to learn).

Desirable: Experience in social housing or local authority environment, knowledge of damp and mould diagnosis, experience liaising with legal teams or contractors.

Qualifications: Trade qualification or equivalent experience, such as ONC, City & Guilds, or a relevant building or construction qualification. Suitable for experienced tradespeople or those with a building or surveying background.

Additional Information:

  • Travel across the city is required; use of a vehicle is desirable but not essential.
  • No weekend working.
  • Flexitime available, though work is customer-driven.
  • Full training and support provided, including support from surveyors on complex cases.
