Job Description

AMHP (Approved Mental Health Professional) – Emergency Duty Team
  • Location: Manchester
  • Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
  • Salary:£39,186 – £43,421 per annum + 20% for unsociable hours

Manchester City Council is actively seeking a dedicated AMHP to join our Emergency Duty Service (EDS) team. This vital role provides statutory emergency duty responses outside of office hours, including weekends and bank holidays, in challenging and complex situations. The successful candidate will be an integral part of a team of 9 AMHPs, all of whom are qualified social workers.

Day-to-Day of the Role:

  • Work a 35-hour week over an 8-week rolling rota, typically involving 11-hour shifts (3pm to 2am or 10.30pm to 9.30am).
  • Conduct Mental Health Act assessments and address any emergency social care issues across Manchester.
  • Operate autonomously as a lone worker, making quick, law-compliant decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Engage in safeguarding processes to protect vulnerable residents, collaborating closely with City Council colleagues, partner agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Manage tasks including the application for detention under the Mental Health Act, Community Treatment Orders, and Guardianship requests.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Must be a qualified AMHP with a professional Social Work qualification and registered with Social Work England.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an AMHP, with experience in Emergency Duty Teams (EDT).
  • Strong ability to work independently and make decisions quickly in emergency situations.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of handling complex information and making it understandable for various stakeholders.
  • Proficient in IT systems with a willingness to learn new systems as required.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
