At St Pauls Cathedral, our people are at the heart of everything we do. We are looking for a skilled Lead Worker to deliver maintenance, repair and conservation of the Cathedral's roof structures and associated metalwork.
Purpose of the job
To deliver skilled maintenance, repair and conservation of the Cathedral's roof structures and associated metalwork. This includes lead and hard-metal roofing work, rainwater systems maintenance, inspection and diagnosis of defects, while ensuring all works support the long term preservation of this Grade I listed building. The role also requires maintenance and repair to architectural metalwork throughout the estate.
Main duties
Technical Delivery
- Undertake specialist roofing and metalwork repairs including:
- Lead sheet bossing and welding
- Flashings, cappings, gutters, downpipes and outlets
- Standing seam and rolled metal systems
- Lead Sheet Training Academy (LSTA) best practice
- BS 6915 and BS EN 12588
- Conservation approaches that preserve historic fabric
Health and Safety Compliance
- Work at height safely using fixed and mobile access systems
- Participate in risk assessments, method statements and toolbox talks
- Follow all hot works and lead handling safety requirements
- Ensure compliance with statutory and Cathedral health and safety standards
- Support safe coordination of works around worship, visitors and operations
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with the wider Property team to sequence activities safely
- Communicate clearly regarding risks, progress and access needs
- Build strong working relationships with internal colleagues and external specialists
- Engage in heritage craft skills events
Experience & Knowledge
Essential
- Significant craft experience in lead and metal roofing
- Experience working on heritage or historic buildings
- Demonstrable understanding of protecting historic fabric during repairs
- Strong fault diagnosis and roof detailing ability
- Understanding heat transfer and impact on adjacent materials
Desirable
- Knowledge that spans related building fabric elements (drainage, masonry and carpentry interfaces)
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Heritage Skills (Construction) - Lead & Hard Metal Roofing and Cladding or equivalent recognised heritage roofing and welding qualification / experience
- Evidenced competence in line with LSTA / BS 6915 / BS EN 12588 standards
- Confident working at height and using access equipment
- Ability to interpret drawings and conservation instructions
- Strong communication, planning and problem-solving skills
Desirable
- PASMA / IPAF certification
- Welding / Lead Sheet Association training certificates
- Harness trained
- Rope Access Trained
- Leadership skills
The individual will be expected to share in St Pauls Cathedral's commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults; expected to adhere to Cathedral Safeguarding Policies and willing to attend Safeguarding training and report any Safeguarding concerns through appropriate channels; helping the team in day to day tasks that may fall outside of this job description. Work in sympathy with, and in their work support, the Christian aims and mission of St Pauls Cathedral.
