A fantastic opportunity for an Additive Manufacturing & Prototyping Technician to join an innovative technology company in the Cambridge area. This role will support rapid prototyping, fabrication, and small-batch production across engineering and research teams, playing an important part in the development of advanced hardware products. The position can suit either a more junior technician with strong practical skills and potential, or a more experienced specialist looking to help shape and expand in-house prototyping capability.

Our client values those with absolute top academics - therefore, requires a 2.1 or 1st from an internationally renowned university and all A's at A-Level (or international equivalent).

Location: Saffron Walden, Cambridgeshire, full-time onsite

Salary: Depending on experience – £30,000–£40,000 for a Junior-level candidate and £35,000–£50,000 for a Senior-level candidate

Requirements for Additive Manufacturing & Prototyping Technician:

  • Strong hands-on workshop, fabrication, or prototyping experience
  • Experience using 3D printers, whether through industry, education, or personal projects
  • Basic CAD skills for preparing and modifying print files
  • Familiarity with slicing software such as Cura, PrusaSlicer or similar
  • Good understanding of mechanical principles and tolerances
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks at once
  • Close attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Strong organisation and documentation skills
  • Experience in any of the following would be beneficial: CNC machining, laser cutting, DFAM, advanced materials, electronics assembly, robotics, hardware development, printer maintenance or upgrades

Due to the nature of the work, you must be in a position to qualify for UK security clearance.

Responsibilities for Additive Manufacturing & Prototyping Technician:

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a range of additive manufacturing equipment
  • Prepare, slice, and optimise print files for performance, speed, and accuracy
  • Manage printer setup, calibration, material changes, and print monitoring
  • Carry out post-processing activities such as curing, support removal, sanding, and surface finishing
  • Maintain print logs, build records, and material inventory
  • Support hands-on prototyping for a range of mechanical and hardware assemblies
  • Fabricate prototype parts using workshop tools and equipment
  • Produce jigs, fixtures, brackets, enclosures, and test hardware for engineering teams
  • Assemble prototype systems and support integration with wider hardware builds
  • Build and maintain test rigs used for development work
  • Work with engineers to improve designs for manufacturability and practical use
  • Make basic CAD updates and prepare models for additive manufacturing
  • Suggest improvements around tolerances, strength, assembly, and print efficiency
  • Inspect printed and fabricated components for accuracy, performance, and defects
  • Help keep workshop and prototyping areas organised, safe, and efficient
  • Contribute to improved workflows for repeatability, print quality, and output efficiency
