The Design and Technical teams are involved in all aspects of housing design and innovation, researching the best materials at the best cost. In terms of design, there is a sheer variety of our sites, many using existing buildings, each presenting unique problems to solve. New materials, sustainability, and value drive our work amid ever-changing building and environmental legislation. Most team members have an architectural or engineering background and gain expertise in design and project management in a thought-provoking setting. Reporting to the Managing Director, the role supports site development and attainment of targets through management of all technical services from land acquisition to site completion and final adoption.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the Technical team is fully resourced, well-directed, and supported in communication, training and development.
  • Engage with business management, work effectively as part of the senior management team, and take a whole-company perspective.
  • Provide a practical and cost-effective technical service, ensure best practice, control costs, and maximise revenue generation and contribution to operating profit.
  • Manage the professional fee budget for each development.
  • Produce technical design solutions encompassing site evaluation, architectural and engineering design, investigation of technical problems, and provision of economical viable resolutions.
  • Ensure technical department procedures are adhered to and that technical reports and required drawings are delivered on schedule.
  • Appropriately report to the MD and Divisional Board in line with the standard format and schedule.
  • Promote and act in accordance with Group values, systems, policies and procedures.
  • Undertake the role of Principal Designer under the CDM Regulations.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable effective experience in a similar role or at the level of Design/Technical Manager within a major company.
  • Ideally qualified to degree or HNC in Construction, Engineering, Town Planning or Urban Design, RICS or RIBA qualified, or NVQ Level 5 in a relevant subject.
  • Excellent communicator, highly detail-oriented, and able to prioritise tasks to meet changing business needs.
  • Extensive experience within established development methodologies.
  • Knowledge of the major functions within Technical Services and their impact on land acquisition and development.
  • Ability to identify issues that impact land value and development costs and to make correct allowances.
  • A motivational team-leader focused on managing, coaching and developing the Technical team to achieve their full potential.
