The Opportunity
Our client is a well-established manufacturer of process instrumentation, supplying precision measurement and control solutions into demanding industrial and safety-critical environments worldwide. With a strong UK heritage, an established international presence and a reputation for engineering excellence, the business is continuing to invest in growth across both existing and emerging markets. They are now seeking a Head of Technical Business Development to lead the identification, development and conversion of technically complex business opportunities across the UK and selected international markets.
This is a highly consultative, customer-facing role for an experienced instrumentation professional who can engage with end users, OEMs, EPCs, engineering consultants and channel partners to understand complex operational, safety, compliance and process challenges before shaping commercially viable technical solutions. Rather than traditional product selling, the successful candidate will take ownership of opportunities from initial customer discovery through technical evaluation, solution development, commercial negotiation and ultimately order placement.
Acting as the focal point between customers and internal teams, you will ensure customer requirements are translated into clear technical and commercial actions that deliver successful outcomes for both parties. Working closely with sales, engineering, operations and product teams, you will play a key role in expanding the company's presence within regulated and technically demanding industries while identifying new applications and market opportunities for its instrumentation and engineering solutions. This position is home-based with regular travel throughout the UK and occasional international travel where required.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, qualify and convert new business opportunities for industrial process instrumentation solutions.
- Build strategic relationships with end users, OEMs, EPCs, engineering consultants, contractors and channel partners.
- Use structured technical questioning to understand customer challenges, process requirements, compliance obligations and commercial drivers.
- Conduct site visits to validate technical requirements and identify opportunities for standard, modified or engineered solutions.
- Translate customer needs into detailed opportunity briefs and coordinate support from engineering, operations, procurement and sales teams.
- Develop and shape technical solutions aligned to customer requirements across a broad range of industrial process applications.
- Lead customer engagement through discovery, feasibility assessment, specification development, quotation, technical clarification, negotiation and order placement.
- Maintain ownership of opportunities until successful order receipt and handover.
- Develop strategic accounts and target applications within regulated and demanding process industries.
- Support growth across the UK and selected international markets where appropriate.
- Gather and communicate market intelligence relating to competitor activity, customer buying behaviour, certification requirements and emerging opportunities.
- Maintain an accurate opportunity pipeline, CRM records and commercial forecasts.
Skills & Experience Required
- Strong understanding of industrial process instrumentation and its application within process industries.
- Proven experience in technical sales, sales engineering, application engineering or a commercially focused engineering role.
- Track record of developing and converting technically complex opportunities into commercial success.
- Ability to understand customer challenges, define requirements and develop effective technical solutions.
- Strong commercial awareness, including opportunity qualification, negotiation and account development.
- Credible communicator able to engage with engineers, project teams, procurement teams and senior stakeholders.
- Experience working with OEMs, EPCs, engineering consultants, contractors or distribution partners.
- Excellent communication, relationship-building and opportunity management skills.
- Willingness to travel throughout the UK and internationally where required.
The Individual
- Technically credible and commercially focused.
- Curious, consultative and solution-oriented.
- Comfortable challenging assumptions and uncovering root customer problems.
- Persistent in driving opportunities through to successful conclusion.
- Structured and disciplined in opportunity management.
- Able to simplify complex technical challenges for customers and internal stakeholders.
