About the Role
Reporting to the CEO and as part of the Senior Management Team (SMT), the Technical Director will lead and manage the Technical team, ensuring that appropriate product strategies are in place to enable effective sales activity across the Group, that a strong pipeline and design funnel is maintained, and that strong working relationships exist between the Technical team, wider business functions and key suppliers.
Additionally, you will act as the technical expert within your nominated technology area, creating and converting a sustainable and profitable design funnel while developing and implementing product strategies that drive sales growth.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for developing a sustainable design funnel; able to work independently and with colleagues to convert projects into Design Wins and production opportunities.
- Working closely with Sales and Technical teams to ensure customers receive the highest levels of expertise and support throughout the design process.
- Acting as a subject matter expert within the solutions portfolio and contributing significantly to customer adoption of strategic technologies.
- Supporting and growing social media activity through the promotion of new products and helping coordinate webinars, exhibitions and marketing campaigns aligned to strategic supplier partners.
- Set and manage KPIs and targets for the Technology team to drive high performance across the pipeline, design funnel and product strategies, with a focus on achieving design wins and sales.
- Report on Technology team activity and outputs as required to the SMT and Board.
- Work closely with colleagues across Sales, Account Management and Purchasing to ensure the Technology team provides the support and information needed to win and maintain business at appropriate margin levels.
- Line manage the Technology team, including appraisals, development, coaching, recruitment and performance management.
- Generate a design funnel within your own technology area at a level sufficient to achieve sales targets.
- Record and maintain accurate project records within the central design log.
- Carry out customer visits and record activity within the company CRM and reporting tools.
- Maintain supplier growth plans for key suppliers and conduct regular reviews to assess project progress and define actions required for conversion.
- Manage and prepare for supplier business reviews to ensure strong communication, market share growth and strategic supplier engagement.
- Identify gaps within the product portfolio and recommend solutions through existing supplier relationships or new franchise opportunities.
- Provide technical support to customers throughout the design cycle, helping them successfully implement technology through evaluation, testing, integration, production ordering and long-term support.
- Act as a technology expert within your area of responsibility, reporting on market developments, emerging technologies and opportunities to strengthen supplier partnerships.
- Undertake supplier training and participate in joint customer visits where appropriate.
- Build relationships with senior decision-makers across customers and suppliers, keeping stakeholders informed of plans, initiatives and progress while strengthening strategic partnerships.
Qualifications
- An electronics or engineering degree, or equivalent qualification, is desirable.
- Required Skills
- Extensive knowledge and expertise within a relevant technical discipline.
- Experience managing a design funnel and supporting customers with design-in opportunities.
- Knowledge of technical or value-added distribution environments.
- Experience leading and managing technical and/or sales teams.
- A strong commercial understanding, with the ability to drive commercial focus and deliver results both personally and through others.
