Engineering Lead (two positions) | Major UK Bank | London / Hybrid (1-2 days in office) | £100,000 - £120,000

I'm working with a major UK bank on two Engineering Lead hires.

These are senior, technical leadership roles: leading multiple software engineering teams, owning technical strategy, and building the platforms and services the bank runs on.

This is a business investing seriously in its engineering capability, and these roles sit right at the centre of that.

You'd be trusted with real scale, real complexity, and systems that matter to millions of customers.

Why this role is worth a look

Plenty of engineering leadership roles are one or the other: pure people management with the technical work long gone, or a team lead title with no real influence. This is neither.

You'd lead several multi-discipline engineering teams, but you'd also own the technical strategy behind them.

Systems design, architecture decisions, product roadmaps, migration plans.

You'd be the person senior stakeholders come to when they want to know what's technically possible, and the person engineers look to for direction and standards.

There are two positions, so you'd also have a genuine peer.

What you'll own

The technical delivery of one or more software engineering teams, including line management, coaching, and mentoring.

Converting functional and non-functional requirements into designs your teams can build.

Defining the technical strategy and advising on roadmaps and migration plans.

There's still building in it too.

Designing reusable libraries and APIs used across the bank, writing unit and integration tests in automated environments, and keeping a close eye on functionality, scalability and performance as things ship.

What they're looking for

A comprehensive software engineering background with recent hands‑on experience, plus a track record of leading high‑performing development teams, including creating and executing an engineering strategy.

Expert knowledge of event‑based and cloud architectures.

Demonstrable experience working in a Continuous Deployment environment and embedding those practices across teams.

Experience building agile product engineering groups that deliver customer value continuously.

The big one: extensive experience applying SRE best practices.

Eliminating toil, defining and monitoring SLIs, SLOs and SLAs, and achieving at least 99.99% service availability.

If you've kept large, always‑on systems running while still shipping quickly, this is your kind of brief.

The setup

£100,000 - £120,000, plus a strong banking benefits package.

London, hybrid, 1-2 days in the office. Two positions available.
