About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a specialist Environmental Crime Team responsible for protecting communities and the environment by investigating and disrupting serious environmental offending across the North West.
As an Environmental Crime Officer, you will play a key role in tackling waste crime and wider environmental offences through intelligence-led investigations and enforcement activity.
Working alongside colleagues from the Environment Agency, police forces, local authorities and other partner organisations, you will gather intelligence, investigate criminality, prepare prosecution files and support enforcement action against individuals and organised criminal groups causing environmental harm.
No two days are the same.
One day you may be working with the operator of an illegal waste site to achieve compliance, while the next you could be supporting operations targeting organised criminal networks involved in large-scale waste crime.
This is an operational role requiring excellent investigative skills, resilience and the ability to communicate confidently with a wide range of stakeholders, including individuals who may be confrontational or hostile.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct intelligence-led investigations into waste crime and other environmental offences.
- Apply the
4P Approach (Prepare, Prevent, Protect and Pursue) to identify opportunities to disrupt environmental criminality.
- Gather, develop and assess intelligence from multiple sources to support enforcement activity.
- Undertake investigations in accordance with relevant criminal investigation legislation and best practice.
- Obtain witness statements, interview suspects where appropriate and secure evidential material.
- Prepare comprehensive case files for legal proceedings and present evidence where required.
- Work collaboratively with police forces, local authorities, government agencies and specialist enforcement partners.
- Support operational activity aimed at disrupting organised crime groups involved in environmental offending.
- Maintain accurate investigation records and ensure evidential continuity throughout investigations.
- Build positive working relationships with legitimate operators to encourage compliance whilst taking robust enforcement action where necessary.
- Adapt communication style appropriately when dealing with challenging or confrontational individuals.
- Contribute to intelligence gathering, operational planning and joint enforcement operations across the region.
- Ensure investigations are conducted safely, professionally and in accordance with Environment Agency policies and procedures.

- Previous experience within an enforcement, investigation or regulatory environment.
- Experience gathering, assessing and developing intelligence to support investigations.
- Ability to prepare detailed reports and evidential case files.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience working collaboratively with partner agencies.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Willingness and ability to obtain
NPPV Level 1-3 Police Vetting .
