We are recruiting a Trainee Claims Handler in Bolton for an established, FCA-regulated insurance business. You do not need to have worked in insurance. You need to be good with people on the phone, organised enough to run your own workload, and interested in learning a proper trade. This is the route into insurance that people struggle to find. Most claims jobs want two years' experience. This one trains you, pays for your CII qualifications, and gives you a dedicated in-house trainer who coaches you one to one.

Who this is for

If you are in a contact centre, in complaints, in customer service for a utility, a housing association, a lettings agent or a bank — you are closer to being a Trainee Claims Handler than you think. You already run a caseload. You already work to a deadline and to rules someone audits. You already ring people who are having a bad day and sort it out. That is most of the job. The insurance part is what they teach you. Also worth a look if you are in retail or hospitality management and want out of evenings and weekends for good.

What you will be doing

  • Take motor claims when they first come in — get the details right, and tell the customer honestly what happens next
  • Work your own caseload of claims by phone and in writing, and keep every one moving
  • Be the point of contact for policyholders and brokers
  • Learn how liability works — who was at fault and why
  • Flag anything that does not look right

What you will need

  • Customer service experience in some form — contact centre, complaints, retail, hospitality, admin
  • Genuinely good on the phone, and able to stay calm when someone is not
  • Organised, accurate, and comfortable picking up new computer systems
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above in English and Maths
  • Willing to work towards the CII Certificate — fully funded, in work time

What you get

  • £24,479 – £26,500, with annual salary reviews
  • 35 hours, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm. No evenings. No weekends. No rota. Flexible start and finish, hybrid after probation
  • Fully funded CII qualifications — a recognised professional qualification, paid for
  • One-to-one coaching from a dedicated in-house claims trainer
  • 29 days' holiday including bank holidays, rising to 36 with length of service, plus your birthday off and a half-day for seasonal shopping
  • Holiday buy and sell, early finish on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve
  • Company-paid health cash plan — dental, optical, therapies, 24/7 GP access, counselling
  • Contributory pension, £1,000 refer-a-friend bonus, recognition bonus of up to £300
  • Free on-site parking, casual dress with free branded clothing, cycle to work scheme
  • Sports and social club, on-site mental health first aiders
  • A Living Wage and Living Hours employer, Disability Confident Committed

Being straight with you

The learning curve is real. Insurance has its own language and it takes a few months before claims feel routine — the first ones are hard work. It is also five days a week on site to begin with, and you will need to drive, because the site is on the edge of Egerton and the bus will not get you there for nine. What you get for that is a qualification somebody else pays for, and a career with somewhere to go. Several of the senior people on this team started exactly where you would.
