Red Bull Powertrains has an exciting opportunity to join our Power Unit engineering team as we transition from building our team’s first Power Units to refining them into a race‑ready package, all aimed at delivering the most competitive car on the 2026 Formula One grid. We are seeking a Materials Technician to support with driving the future of motorsport innovation. You will be based at our state‑of‑the‑art engineering and manufacturing facility in Milton Keynes, designed to produce high‑performance Power Units for the 2026 engine regulations. Working from our Milton Keynes factory you will be integrated within the Material and Battery Engineering Group of Red Bull Powertrains. Your role will be to support the Materials Team as part of their material development and failure investigation work. This will entail sample preparation, materials testing (hardness, tensile, fatigue), health and safety support, equipment maintenance and stock taking among other responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- Lab management including equipment maintenance schedules and consumables
- Preparation of metallographic samples
- Use microscopes including SEM for imaging
- Operation of general metallographic laboratory equipment
- Operation of materials testing equipment including but not limited to hardness, tensile, fatigue, XRF and FTIR
- Management of Equipment Risk Assessments and Operating Procedures
- Management of Laboratory COSHH assessments
Experience:
- Minimum requirement of a relevant Engineering College qualification or Apprenticeship
- Practical, hands‑on experience within a material science laboratory
- Ability to prepare metallurgical samples for examination
- Experience of writing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures for laboratory equipment
- Familiar with the operation of analysis equipment such as SEM, EDX, FTIR, TMA, LFA and DGA
- Able to generate material data for use by design, which will involve design and/or manufacture of samples and conducting relevant tests as well as interpretation of the results
- Previous experience of the generation of COSHH and Risk Assessments
- Methodical approach to problem solving
- Practical hands‑on approach with ability to self‑manage workload and priorities when necessary
- Ability to communicate effectively across different areas of the business
