Overview: The Technical Operators (Access Services) role is to manage and operate all the broadcast equipment within Red Bee Media’s Signing Gallery at the Broadcast Centre. They will be responsible for all technical tasks within the gallery. The successful candidate will manage the equipment and workflow and ensure the successful delivery of access (signing) to the specifications of Red Bee’s clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate the studio gallery for daily live signing, and pre-recorded programmes, including VT mixers, remote studio cameras, File Delivery, HD and other VT format machines, Chroma Keyers and other associated equipment.
  • File Based Delivery workflow – Harmonics/Orchestra; knowledge of Da Vinci, Stratus.
  • Record signed programmes with background and import on files.
  • Technical specifications; QC EyeBall; paperwork and logging process; filming schedule.
  • Tech Operator’s reports and related administrative duties.
  • Log in and cache media for BBC, Channel 4, TNT Sports and clients; perform technical quality checks of material file-based delivery and report faults according to client guidelines.
  • Meet the Signing production targets for live signing and pre-recorded programmes.
  • Understand client requirements and work with the SLT team to meet them; introduce the production department and programme makers to SLT to encourage collaboration and support; contribute to SLT editorial policy and standards.
  • Monitor materials files and recordings to ensure standards of picture and sound quality in line with Red Bee Media and client standards.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Technical skills related to transmission of programs via manual and computerised systems; Microsoft operating systems.
  • Good understanding of network technologies; experience in providing remote support.
  • Audio and video equipment systems, including live remote systems and knowledge of different database technologies.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to anticipate problems and resolve them quickly; strong initiative.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical people, staff and freelancers, remaining calm under pressure.
  • Understanding of the role in Red Bee Media and Access Services; demonstrable motivation for undertaking this role.
  • Experience in a broadcast media environment.

  • Ability to work as a team member and also independently to carry out tasks.
  • Strong customer service orientation with a view of services provision.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work under pressure.

Working patterns:

The successful candidate will be required to work a rota with varying shift patterns including weekends and public holidays. Shifts are typically 8- or 12-hour and usually run between 06:00 and 21:00.

Reporting Lines and Relationships:

This role reports to the Production Manager - Signing. The role should develop strong relationships with the team and the technical operator’s team. A good relationship with the BBC News team, ECA and technology teams is important to aid communication for reporting.
