Role Overview
Subtitlers create live and pre-recorded subtitles for various TV programs, ensuring the content is accessible to viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing. Live subtitles are produced using voice recognition and re-speaking, including punctuation and commands. Pre-recorded subtitles are time-coded and consider reading speeds, descriptive labels, and program tone.
Access Services operates 24/7, and subtitlers must work on a rotational shift pattern.
Responsibilities
- Produce high-quality subtitles for diverse programming, including news, sports, documentaries, music, children’s shows, dramas, and soaps.
- Edit and proofread subtitles to ensure clarity, accuracy, and retention of program essence.
- Review and correct own work and scripts from others.
Qualifications
- Excellent written Welsh skills, including spelling and grammar, with meticulous attention to detail.
- Experience in proofreading and editing.
- Confident speaking voice.
- Ability to remain calm and make quick editorial decisions under pressure.
- Understanding of challenges faced by hearing-impaired viewers.
- Broad knowledge of TV content and industry developments.
- Interest in current affairs, politics, and sports.
