We are looking for an allrounder to join our maintenance team within our Recycling Plant in the West Midlands.
Job Role
Mechanical/Electrical Welder in the scrap and recycling industry.
Responsible for:
- Maintaining, repairing, and fabricating heavy-duty machinery used to process scrap metal. This role combines welding skills (MIG, Stick) with mechanical troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, electrical maintenance & mechanical for equipment such as shredders, shears, balers, conveyors, and mobile hydraulic machinery (crawlers, magnets).
Key Job Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Repair: Diagnose and repair structural, hydraulic, and electrical defects in heavy equipment.
- Fabrication: Fabricate, lay out, and weld new parts or reinforce existing components using MIG or Stick welding.
- Cutting & Dismantling: Use oxy-acetylene or plasma cutting equipment to dismantle worn machinery or process oversized scrap metal.
- Hydraulic/Pneumatic Systems: Repair hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and pneumatic systems on processing machines.
- Electrical Troubleshooting: Perform minor electrical repairs on motors, wiring, and magnetic lifters.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to strict safety protocols (lockout/tagout), including working in confined spaces, at heights, and with heavy suspended loads.
- Preventative Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and tightening of bolts on equipment.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Welding Proficiency: Strong experience with SMAW (Stick) and GMAW (MIG/Flux-core) welding.
- Technical Knowledge: Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Experience working with conveyors, diesel engines, and hydraulic systems.
- Tools & Equipment: Proficiency with grinders, drills, torches, and other heavy-duty shop tools.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects, and work in adverse weather conditions.
- Certifications: Valid driver's license, and in some cases, specialized certifications in welding or crane operation.
- 360 grab experience (not essential).
