We are currently seeking experienced and reliable HGV Class 2 Drivers to join the despatch team of a major bakery distribution centre in Walthamstow. The role involves multi-drop deliveries of bakery goods to major retailers and distribution points, with an emphasis on physical activity and safety compliance.
This is a 7-day operation, and candidates must be available for flexible shift patterns, including weekends and nights. Deliveries are made using barn-door vehicles and tail-lifts, and all product handling is done using wheeled bread dollies.
Shift Pattern:
- Night Deliveries: Start between 15:00 and 19:00
- Day Runs: Start between 00:30 and 04:30
- Routes: Range from 6 to 18 drops depending on distance
- Schedule: Minimum 4 shifts per week available
- Rotational Routing: Drivers typically rotate through 34 regular delivery routes
Key Responsibilities:
- Multi-drop deliveries to supermarkets, petrol stations, and commercial sites
- Manual handling of bread dollies (pushing/pulling/loading/unloading)
- Operation of tail-lift vehicles and use of PDAs for delivery tracking
- Route familiarisation and safe vehicle handling
- Communication of any delays, issues, or compliance breaches to the depot
Requirements:
- Valid UK HGV Class 2 Driver (Category C) licence
- Valid CPC and UK-issued Digital Tachograph Card
- Minimum 12 months recent HGV Class 2 Driver experience (longer preferred)
- Maximum 6 points on licence (minor only - no DR, DD, or IN codes)
- Physical fitness to complete full shifts and handle frequent loading tasks
- Familiarity with PDA devices and multi-drop delivery processes
- Full PPE: Safety footwear, gloves, hi-vis vest
- Must hold or be eligible for a Site Passport Card
Induction & Assessment:
- Unpaid assessment (approx. 2 hours)
- Paid 8-hour induction includes theory test (driver hours, WTD), vehicle check, and site induction
- Minimum 2-day shadowing with experienced drivers
- Failed assessments result in a 3-month wait period before reassessment
