The predicted salary is between 43 - 44 Β£ per hour.

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Health Officer (Food Safety) to support the delivery of the 2025/26 Food Standards Agency Code of Practice inspection programme. This role focuses solely on food inspections and is offered on an hourly paid basis, inside IR35. The successful candidate must be local to the District and have access to their own vehicle, as on-site inspections are required for a minimum of four days per week.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carrying out programmed and reactive food safety inspections in accordance with the Food Law Code of Practice Competency Framework
  • Undertaking investigations, inspections of premises, processes and plant, and responding to service requests
  • Taking appropriate enforcement action under relevant legislation where required
  • Preparing accurate inspection records, reports and legally compliant notices
  • Undertaking formal and informal sampling in line with agreed protocols
  • Attending court proceedings, hearings or inquiries when required
  • Representing the Authority at meetings and liaising with internal teams where necessary
  • Working flexibly, including occasional work outside normal hours to meet service needs
  • Using mobile inspection technology (tablet-based systems such as Merlin)
Requirements
  • Minimum experience: 2 years post-qualification.
Essential Qualifications
  • BSc in Environmental Health or Diploma in Environmental Health
  • Fully qualified Environmental Health Practitioner
  • Registered with the EHRB / CIEH Register of Chartered EHPs / Register of Food Control Officers
  • Meets the qualification and competency requirements set out in Chapter 3 of the Food Law Code of Practice
  • Working towards or completed the FSA Competency Framework
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH)
  • Strong working knowledge of food safety legislation and enforcement procedures
  • Excellent communication, decision-making and report-writing skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage a varied inspection workload
Desirable Qualifications
  • Previous experience using NEC Assure
  • Confident using tablets and mobile inspection systems
