About The Role:

The company is currently looking for a new Head of Transport to join the business and support the safe day to day running of the company's fleet. The company operates from its Head Office in Leyland, Lancashire, providing Utility Infrastructure Solutions across the UK, Nationwide Haulage and Transportation Services. The Head of Transport will report directly to the Operations Director and will be responsible for delivering the company's transport operating plan.

Experience within the Utilities industry is preferred, but not essential, along with a valid Class 1 HGV licence, CPC licence and recent O licence experience. Experience with using the R2C fleet and workshop management system is also preferred, but again, not essential.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Ensuring that all vehicles within the fleet are properly maintained, serviced and operated by undertaking site visits and liaising with on-site supervisors.
  • Ensuring that the company operates within the requirements of its obligations as a FORS Registered Member.
  • Ensuring that all FORS reporting requirements are met to maintain the company's FORS accredited status.
  • Play an active role as a member of the company management team, attending weekly meetings with all divisions to contribute innovative ideas to improve and develop the business.
  • Management and development of internal Transport Management Systems (TMS).
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of transport legislation and requirements, ensuring that all legal and statutory requirements are met in line with the company's O Licence undertakings across the company and that transport is operationally compliant.
  • Assist the directors in establishing operational policies and objectives which complement the business and clearly communicate operational targets to ensure standards are met.
  • Manage costs and overheads and other factors affecting the performance of the fleet to ensure that it provides a quality service at an effective cost, utilising the optimum mix of own and subcontract vehicles.
  • Plan, develop and implement strategy for driver training, such as DCPC, induction and maintain appropriate systems for measuring.
  • Review the operational performance by analysing trends in order to develop targets in collaboration with directors and senior management, such as fleet, vehicle and driver performance, service provider performance, vehicle down time and equipment.
  • Manage suppliers ensuring that they are available as required and provide the set standard of service at the most competitive cost.
  • Undertake timely reviews of non-conformance reports, implementing corrective measures to improve performance.
  • To prepare and present monthly reports on fleet performance.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Full HGV Class 1 licence is a must.
  • Background in the Utilities Industry where possible.
  • Transport Manager CPC and refresher training in the last 5 years.
  • Recent multisite O Licence holder.
  • Knowledge and experience of using integrated Transport Management systems.
  • Experience in leading a team across a multisite operation with different vehicle, trailer types and cultures.
  • Experience of dealing with outside organisations such as the DVSA, HSE and The Office of the Traffic Commissioner.
  • Strong knowledge of transport legislation, driver regulations and fleet compliance.
  • Up to date knowledge on load security and legislation.
  • Experience of DCPC centre approval and course writing.
  • Contract management experience.
  • Excellent IT, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • People development and management skills.
  • Experience using tachograph analysis software.
  • NEBOSH and driver trainer qualifications are desirable.
