Quantity Surveyor wanted for painting, planned works and social housing contracts across Hertfordshire and the Northern Home Counties.

Are you a Quantity Surveyor with experience surveying or estimating painting works within the construction industry? Do you understand the financial and contractual controls needed to manage live contracts properly, protect margin, recover variations and drive commercial performance?

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially strong Quantity Surveyor to join an established construction and property services business delivering painting, refurbishment and social housing works across the Northern Home Counties.

The successful Quantity Surveyor will take responsibility for the commercial performance of contracts from tender and procurement through to valuations, applications, subcontractor payments, CVRs, final accounts and cash collection.

This role would suit a Quantity Surveyor, Project Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Surveyor or Estimator with experience in painting works, planned maintenance, refurbishment, social housing, external decorations, cyclical works or property services.

The role

As Quantity Surveyor, you will manage and control the financial and technical aspects of contracts to minimise costs, maximise value and ensure strong commercial performance. You will be responsible for the financial performance of allocated projects through to final account and collection of cash.

The role will involve:

  • Measuring and preparing cost estimates for contracts and tenders
  • Pricing works using Bills of Quantities and Schedule of Rates
  • Reviewing contract and tender documents and highlighting commercial risks
  • Managing procurement, invoicing, valuations and payment processes
  • Setting and managing contract CVRs
  • Monitoring contract costs against tender allowances
  • Identifying, recording and agreeing variations, extras and changes in scope
  • Preparing and submitting applications for payment
  • Approving subcontractor payments in line with company process
  • Completing final accounts within contractual timescales
  • Producing accurate financial reports covering progress, valuations, billings and cash
  • Supporting gross margin delivery across live contracts
  • Monitoring WIP, aged debt, retention release and under-performing contracts

What we are looking for

This is the key requirement: You must have previous experience surveying or estimating painting works within the construction industry, along with a clear understanding of the financial and contractual controls required on a contract.

You will also need:

  • Experience as a Quantity Surveyor, Project Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Surveyor or Estimator
  • Experience working on painting, decorating, planned works, refurbishment or property services contracts
  • Background in social housing works
  • Experience working with BOQ and SOR contracts
  • Strong understanding of valuations, applications, CVRs, variations and final accounts
  • Experience with direct labour and subcontract labour
  • Good subcontractor procurement and payment experience
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a commercial team
  • Full UK driving licence
  • CSCS card, ideally Manager or Professionally Qualified Person level
