The Technical Author Role
As a Technical Author, you will produce clear, accurate and user-friendly engineering documentation in accordance with customer requirements, project instructions and internal quality procedures. You will gather technical information directly from engineers, customers and source material, interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, design data and applicable standards, and translate complex technical detail into documentation that can be easily understood by its intended users.

- Controlled technical documentation
- Technical publications
- Illustrated parts information
- Interactive electronic technical manuals
- Product support and service documentation
Key Responsibilities
- Produce high-quality technical documentation for defence, aerospace and engineering projects
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, technical data and applicable standards
- Gather information through technical research, engineering input and customer liaison
- Write clear operating, maintenance, repair and installation procedures
- Produce documentation from first principles, source material or existing technical information
- Liaise with Project Managers, Senior Technical Authors, Directors, engineers and customers
- Ensure documentation is accurate, consistent and appropriate for its intended audience
- Carry out quality checks on documentation produced by other authors
- Follow internal quality, security and controlled-documentation procedures
- Support customer liaison and project coordination on smaller assignments
- Travel to customer sites occasionally where required
About You
You will be technically minded, highly organised and comfortable working with detailed engineering information. You may already be working as a: Technical Author, Technical Writer, Engineering Technical Author, Technical Documentation Engineer, Technical Publications Author, Documentation Specialist, Design Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, Product Support Engineer, ILS Engineer.
Previous Technical Author experience would be advantageous, but applications are also welcomed from engineers and technically experienced professionals who can demonstrate excellent written English, strong attention to detail and the ability to explain complex technical processes clearly.
Skills and Experience
The successful candidate is likely to have:
- An engineering, manufacturing or technical background
- Excellent written English and proofreading skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, CAD data or technical specifications
- The ability to turn complex engineering information into clear instructions and procedures
- Strong research and information-gathering skills
- Good organisation and time-management skills
- Confidence communicating with engineers, customers and project stakeholders
- Experience working within quality, security or document-control procedures
- Experience within defence, aerospace, aviation, automotive, manufacturing, product support, maintenance, technical publications, ILS or another regulated engineering environment would be particularly advantageous.
Location
The role is based in Grantham, Lincolnshire, with hybrid working requiring only one day per week in the office. The location is accessible from: Newark, Sleaford, Stamford, Bourne, Melton Mowbray, Oakham, Lincoln, Nottingham, Peterborough and surrounding areas.
