You will be joining a specialist applications and proposals team, working at the front end of major engineering projects. The Role
As Applications Engineer Technical Proposals, you will play a key role in developing technical and commercial solutions for customers across a range of industrial and energy-related applications. You will work closely with customers, suppliers, engineers, sales teams and project teams to understand requirements, select appropriate solutions and prepare clear, accurate and commercially sound proposals. This is a varied role offering technical challenge, customer contact, commercial exposure and the chance to influence project outcomes from the very beginning.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing customer enquiries, specifications and technical requirements
- Selecting suitable engineered solutions and equipment
- Preparing technical proposals, quotations and commercial submissions
- Developing cost estimates in line with internal guidelines
- Setting product pricing using approved mark-up and commission structures
- Maintaining proactive communication with customers during the quotation process
- Supporting proposal discussions, clarifications and negotiations
- Visiting customer sites to discuss requirements, proposals and technical solutions
- Coordinating drawings and technical information required for quotations
- Preparing clear handover documentation for the project delivery team
- Supporting project teams throughout the project lifecycle
- Analysing system performance and identifying improvement opportunities
- Working with mechanical systems involving thermodynamics, heat transfer, combustion and process technology
About You
You will need to be technically confident, commercially aware and comfortable dealing with customers in a professional engineering environment. This role could suit someone from applications engineering, proposals, estimating, technical sales, project engineering or mechanical engineering who wants a role with more customer contact, variety and commercial influence.
You will ideally have:
- Experience as an Applications Engineer, Proposals Engineer, Technical Sales Engineer, Sales Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Project Engineer or Estimating Engineer
- A background in mechanical engineering, process engineering, energy, oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, industrial systems or technical equipment
- Ability to interpret customer requirements and develop practical technical solutions
- Experience preparing quotations, estimates, technical proposals or commercial submissions
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Good analytical and problem-solving ability
- Confidence working with customers, suppliers and internal engineering teams
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently
- A full UK driving licence
Useful but not essential:
- Engineering degree or equivalent technical qualification
- Familiarity with AutoCAD
- Previous technical sales or customer-facing engineering experience
- Negotiation experience with customers or suppliers
- Experience with combustion systems, process equipment, heat transfer, thermodynamics, mechanical systems or power generation equipment
Location
This is an onsite role based in the Stamford / Oakham / Rutland area. The role may suit candidates based in or around: Stamford, Oakham, Peterborough, Grantham, Bourne, Market Deeping, Uppingham, Melton Mowbray, Corby, Kettering, Spalding, Sleaford, Leicester. Candidates will need to be within a realistic daily commute of the site.
