Technical Author role with outstanding work-life balance. Are you from an engineering background with strong written communication skills and an eye for detail? We are recruiting on behalf of one of our longest-standing clients, an established and highly respected technical services business based in Grantham. This is an excellent opportunity to join a specialist Product Support Services provider, working on varied technical documentation projects across sectors including defence, manufacturing and automotive.
Alongside interesting project work and long-term stability, this role offers a genuinely strong work-life balance, including hybrid working with only one day per week in the office, a 36-hour working week and half-day Fridays.
With business extremely busy and multiple projects currently underway, the company is looking to recruit one Technical Author now, with potential for further opportunities over the next 6-9 months due to planned retirements within the team.
About the Company: Established originally as a traditional technical publications provider, the business has grown into one of the UK’s leading providers of Product Support Services. They support customers across defence, manufacturing and automotive, delivering technical documentation, Integrated Logistic Support, safety and environmental support, technical illustration and training. Their teams bring together technical authors, Integrated Logistic Support engineers, safety engineers, technical illustrators and technical trainers to deliver a best-in-class service to customers.
The Role: As a Technical Author, you will be responsible for producing clear, accurate and informative technical documentation in line with customer requirements, project instructions and internal quality procedures. You will gather technical information first hand, interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, design data and applicable standards, and present complex information in a clear and useful format. You may be working on anything from technical manuals produced in Microsoft Word through to more complex documentation sets or interactive electronic manuals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Produce technical documentation in line with project instructions, customer requirements and internal quality procedures.
- Gather technical information through research, customer contact, engineering input and analysis of source material.
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, design information, technical data and applicable standards.
- Document procedures clearly and accurately from first principles or through technical analysis.
- Liaise with Project Managers, Senior Technical Authors, Directors, internal departments and customers.
- Support the creation, validation and improvement of technical manuals and publication outputs.
- Carry out independent quality checks on other authors' work for format, clarity and technical accuracy.
- Follow all company quality, security and controlled documentation procedures.
- Support customer liaison and project management duties on smaller projects where required.
- Travel to customer sites when required, which may occasionally include overseas travel.
About You: This role would suit someone who is technically minded, organised and detail-focused, with the ability to take complex engineering information and present it clearly. An engineering background would be highly advantageous. You may already be working as a Technical Author, Technical Writer, Documentation Engineer, Project Documentation Specialist, Design Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Maintenance Engineer or in another technical role where documentation, drawings, manuals or standards form part of your work.

- Engineering or technical background preferred.
- Excellent command of written English.

- Experience working with engineering drawings, CAD models, technical data or standards.
