CCF School Staff Instructor and Head of Shooting

About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced CCF School Staff Instructor and Head of Shooting to join Uppingham School, one of the UKs most respected independent boarding schools.
This key firearms instructor role combines responsibility for leading all shooting activities with ensuring the safe and effective delivery of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) across Army, Navy, and RAF contingents.
You will act as a central figure in the schools CCF provision supporting cadet development, managing staff and equipment, and ensuring all training and activities meet MOD and school regulations. The post offers a unique opportunity to combine military expertise, teaching, and leadership within a forward-thinking educational environment.
Key Responsibilities
As CCF School Staff Instructor and Head of Shooting, you will take on wide-ranging duties across four areas:
Shooting Leadership
- Plan, deliver, and supervise shooting sessions for pupils throughout the week, including competitive fixtures, postal shoots, and inter-school competitions.
- Lead the full-bore and small-bore shooting programmes, coaching cadets and staff, and preparing teams for local and national competitions such as Bisley.
- Oversee the Uppingham School Shooting Range, ensuring its safe operation and compliance with all MOD, Home Office, and school health & safety regulations.
- Manage all firearms, ammunition, and targetry, including purchase, maintenance, servicing, and compliance with legal requirements.
- Liaise with Leicestershire Police Firearms Team to ensure the Rifle Club remains Home Office approved and that firearms certificates remain current.
- Train and support academic and support staff in shooting activities, ensuring ongoing professional development and qualifications are maintained.
CCF Training & Delivery
- Teach and assess cadets and staff on military skills including drill, weapon handling, skill at arms, and fieldcraft.
- Deliver the Army Cadet Syllabus 21 and contribute to the wider development of cadet training programmes across all services.
- Assist in planning, delivering, and supervising term-time field days, weekend exercises, and annual camps.
- Manage logistics for exercises and camps, including accommodation, transport, equipment, feeding, and stores.
- Prepare training area requests, risk assessments, and authority-to-train documentation to ensure all activities are compliant with MOD safety standards.
- Provide on-the-ground leadership during exercises, managing safety, discipline, and logistics while fostering cadet development.
Compliance, Safety & Administration
- Act as Range Manager and Health & Safety Adviser for the indoor small-bore range, carrying out inspections, maintenance, and record-keeping for regulatory compliance.
- Maintain detailed records for training, attendance, qualifications, and equipment using Westminster, SOCS, and AIMS systems.
- Prepare for and lead on external inspections (including Biennial, MEI, and ECI inspections), ensuring all CCF processes meet MOD and school standards.
- Oversee security and safe storage of all arms and ammunition, acting as Unit Security Officer and advising the Commanding Officer on firearms legislation and MOD directives.
- Ensure accurate completion and submission of MOD correspondence, returns, and reports.
Leadership & Support
- Recruit, train, and retain Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs), non-uniformed volunteers, and cadet instructors, ensuring they are appropriately trained, qualified, and supported.
- Maintain comprehensive personal files for officers and cadet force volunteers, ensuring security vetting, training, and qualifications are kept up to date.
- Deliver training, coaching, and mentoring to staff and cadet NCOs, raising standards of instruction and leadership across the contingent.
- Contribute to the strategic development of the CCF at Uppingham School, helping to improve and expand the cadet experience.
About You
- Military qualifications in Skill at Arms and Range Management (essential).
- Previous service as a regular or reserve SNCO/Warrant Officer, or extensive cadet force experience.
- Strong track record in delivering military training, with confidence in teaching cadets and adult staff.
- Experience in managing shooting activities, including compliance, safety, and firearms certification.
- Excellent organisational, communication, and administrative skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience using cadet management systems (SOCS, Westminster).
- Full driving licence (D1 or minibus entitlement desirable).
- First Aid and Adventure Training qualifications desirable.
Working Hours & Benefits
- Part-time, 23 hours per week: MondayFriday afternoons (2.00pm6.00pm) plus Saturday afternoons (1.30pm4.30pm).
- Term-time role plus 3 additional weeks during school holidays.
- Salary: £16,396.27 per annum, paid monthly.
