Are you an experienced Laboratory Manager, Lab Supervisor, Senior Laboratory Technician, Analytical Laboratory Lead or Environmental Laboratory Manager looking for the opportunity to set up a brand-new, state-of-the-art laboratory?
This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing renewables business working within anaerobic digestion, biogas, environmental testing and sustainable agriculture.
You will work closely with the Head of Bioprocess and Senior Biologist to help establish a new laboratory facility near Grantham. This is a key role where you will help set up the lab, put new systems and processes in place, and lead a new team of laboratory technicians.
This is not simply a role maintaining an existing laboratory. It is a chance to shape a modern laboratory function from the beginning.
The Role
As Laboratory Manager, you will be responsible for helping to set up and manage the safe, accurate and efficient operation of a new laboratory service.
You will lead a small team of laboratory technicians, coordinate workloads, oversee laboratory analysis and reporting, and ensure results are delivered accurately and on time.
You will also support laboratory method development, equipment management, sampling activity, quality control, health and safety, COSHH, risk assessments and process improvement.
The business is also working in collaboration with local universities on R&D projects, giving you the opportunity to be involved in the continued development of new methods, biological performance and renewable energy processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Help set up a brand-new, state-of-the-art laboratory near Grantham.
- Work closely with the Head of Bioprocess and Senior Biologist.
- Build, lead and support a new team of laboratory technicians.
- Manage the safe and efficient day-to-day operation of the laboratory.
- Put in place laboratory systems, processes, methods and working practices.
- Coordinate laboratory workloads, testing schedules and reporting deadlines.
- Ensure laboratory analysis is completed accurately, safely and on time.
- Maintain high standards of laboratory quality control and data accuracy.
- Review, develop and implement laboratory methods and procedures.
- Maintain laboratory databases, biology spreadsheets and analysis records.
- Generate routine laboratory reports for internal stakeholders.
- Oversee sample receipt, storage, logging, dispatch and site coordination.
- Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained, calibrated and operating correctly.
- Manage laboratory stock, supplies, equipment and supplier relationships.
- Create and update SOPs, COSHH documents, methods and risk assessments.
- Support laboratory development, new testing methods and accreditation processes.
- Visit operational sites when required to support sampling, training and analysis.
- Support R&D activity with local universities and internal technical teams.
About You
You may currently be working as a Laboratory Manager, Lab Supervisor, Senior Laboratory Technician, Analytical Chemist, Environmental Laboratory Technician, Water Testing Laboratory Lead, Wastewater Laboratory Analyst, Biology Laboratory Lead or Biogas Laboratory Specialist.
You will ideally have:
- A degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science or a related discipline.
- Laboratory experience within AD, biogas, water, wastewater, environmental testing, agriculture, chemistry, biology, food, process or industrial sectors.
- Previous experience supervising, mentoring or line-managing laboratory staff.
- Experience helping to set up, improve or develop laboratory processes, methods or systems.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory testing, quality control and data accuracy.
- Experience working with SOPs, methods, COSHH documents, risk assessments and reports.
- Strong Excel, database and general IT skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to laboratory work.
- Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads.
- Strong communication skills with internal teams, suppliers, external stakeholders and academic partners.
- A full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle.
Experience within anaerobic digestion, biogas, water or wastewater would be a major advantage. However, strong laboratory leadership experience from another relevant scientific, environmental, agricultural, food, chemistry, biology or process-led sector will also be considered.
