About the role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and versatile person to join us in delivering our highly valued and popular library services in Ely, and the surrounding libraries in East Cambridgeshire. Our District Library Assistants lead the front-line team in the day-to-day delivery of the library service. They will report to the library manager and deputise in their absence. They will need to be confident working with the public, a good team player and have ideas and energy to try new things. Excellent IT skills are essential. This role is based at Ely Library; however, you will need to travel to our other libraries in Burwell, Littleport and Soham as well as other libraries within our East Cambs and Fenland district, so you will need to be a car driver. The role involves lone-working in our branch libraries and supporting lone-working colleagues remotely. There is a requirement for some weekend and evening working.
We want to recognise and celebrate the diversity of our local communities and be responsive to their needs. We also want to ensure that we are a fair and equitable employer, striving to achieve a diverse workforce that has the ability to understand, communicate and interact with people across cultures. We therefore encourage applications from all areas of our community. Interviews will be held at Ely Library on Tuesday 18th August. Appointment to this post will be subject to the outcome of an Enhanced Disclosure obtained through the Disclosure and Barring Service. The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

They will be excellent at multi-tasking, be quick and efficient, and enjoy working in a busy environment. They will be able to lead and motivate colleagues and be a strong team player. The candidate will be passionate about what public libraries can offer, and be able to promote our services. Although there is plenty of routine work, there is also scope to be creative. Training will be given on specific library systems but an ability to work with IT is assumed. Although library experience is an advantage we would also like to hear from candidates who have demonstrated exceptional customer service skills in other contexts.
Please note: all applications must be made online via this system, CVβs or other attachments are not accepted. The supporting statement is the most important part of your application, this will be used in the shortlisting process to assess whether you meet the essential requirements for the role.
