This post is a Band 4 with progression to a Band 5. The postholder will:

  • Dispense or check all types of prescriptions and inpatient orders presented to the Pharmacy for wards & departments post clinical validation from Ashford and St Peters Hospital and all community units served by the Pharmacy in accordance with Trust and departmental service level agreements.
  • Work with the Dispensary Lead and Chief Technician for Medicines Management in the provision of an efficient, cost-effective medicines management system.

Main duties of the job:

  • Dispense prescriptions and a variety of medication requests, including Controlled drugs and extemporaneous preparations, unlicensed medication, presented to the Pharmacy from Ashford and St Peters Hospital wards, departments and outside units in accordance with department agreements.
  • Counsel outpatients on the use of their medication (compliance, side effects, possible drug interactions) and check patients understand the information shared.
  • Maintain accurate stock levels of dispensary stock including controlled drugs, and undertake regular stock takes of all dispensary stock in rotation according to departmental procedures. This includes checking accuracy recorded on Ascribe and controlled drug register entries.
  • Assist in the management of stock control in the dispensary for drugs, containers and other support items.
  • Ensure that ‘to follows’ items and special orders are followed up and processed.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

  • Act as a facilitator / supervisor for trainees.
  • Attend continuing education and training provision relevant to the post.
  • Undertake relevant training and continuous professional development in accordance with General Pharmaceutical Council requirements, organisational needs and service priorities.
  • Participate in near miss audits and suggest improvement ideas to support safe pharmacy practice.
  • Participate in late night, weekend and bank holiday rotas.

Essential criteria: NVQ Level 3, GPHC Registration.

Experience

Desirable criteria: Post Registration Pharmacy Experience.
