The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience is divided into 14 academic departments across three major academic Schools: Academic Psychiatry, Mental Health & Psychological Sciences, and Neuroscience. Our School of Academic Psychiatry comprises five clinical departments of psychiatry: Addictions, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Science, Psychological Medicine and Psychosis Studies. We bring together more than 100 Principal Investigators, 16 postgraduate taught programmes and over 250 postgraduate research students, covering the full spectrum of psychiatry from public policy to molecular genetics.
About the role: This is a key role within the School of Academic Psychiatry, providing high-level operational leadership across education, space and people. Working closely with the Senior Business Manager (Operations), you will ensure that core processes run efficiently, are continuously improved, and support the School’s strategic priorities. You will lead and coordinate a team delivering core operational activities, including postgraduate research and taught administration, space planning and health & safety coordination, and cross-school projects. You will also play a key role in driving process improvement, supporting strategic initiatives and ensuring a consistent, high-quality approach to operations across the School. The role requires a proactive, solutions-focused individual who can work across multiple stakeholders, identify opportunities for improvement, and contribute to an inclusive and high-performing culture. This post will be offered on a fixed-term basis for 18 months in the first instance. This is a full-time role (35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE). This role may also be offered as a secondment opportunity.
About you: To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
- Essential criteria
- Significant knowledge and skills of business operations gained through relevant roles, including experience in supporting postgraduate administration, student lifecycle processes, and knowledge of funding models, stipend management and compliance with funder requirements.
- Experience of using Worktribe for studentship or research administration, or similar systems used to manage externally funded activity and financial approvals.
- Experience of producing reports, analysing data and presenting information to support decision-making, including monitoring activity, funding, and compliance within complex administrative processes.
- Solutions-focused self-starter with experience of managing projects involving multiple stakeholders, working to timelines, and ensuring delivery to agreed deadlines.
- Highly proficient IT skills, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint, and experience of using digital tools effectively in day-to-day work.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey specialist or complex information clearly to a range of audiences and build effective working relationships across the School, Faculty, Central Services and external organisations.
- Desirable criteria
- Keen interest in higher education business operations in the UK and an awareness of current challenges in the sector.
- Experience of managing staff, giving feedback on performance levels and/or providing supervision, training, and coaching.
- Experience of using digital tools to support process improvement and reporting, such as SharePoint, Power Automate, SITS and Power BI.
