Make sure complex, mission-critical technology performs exactly as it should, and help the engineers coming up behind you do the same. This is a Software Test Engineer role for an experienced engineer ready to work with real autonomy. As a Software Test Engineer you will play a key part in proving that the products built by an established manufacturer of mission-critical equipment for the aviation and defence sectors perform exactly as they should. Working with a good degree of autonomy, you will support integration and testing, develop and execute test plans and write up detailed results, alongside detailed software design and development for the products and their manufacturing test systems. You will also share your experience, providing informal guidance to junior engineers and bringing new team members up to speed. This is a role for someone who already knows their craft and wants to apply it to genuinely complex, high-stakes technology.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supporting the Test and Acceptance team with integration and testing of company products
  • Developing and executing test plans, and producing clear, detailed test reports
  • Carrying out detailed software design and development for products and their manufacturing test systems
  • Writing, unit testing and debugging software code
  • Taking part in software design and code reviews
  • Producing technical documentation across the full product development lifecycle
  • Applying your knowledge to project requirements with a moderate level of guidance
  • Providing informal guidance to junior engineers and training new team members
  • Anticipating potential problems and planning your work to meet project objectives
  • Supporting the wider department and its activities

Skills and Experience

To succeed as a Software Test Engineer you will need:

  • Proven experience in a software or test engineering role, ideally including hands-on software design and development
  • A first or 2:1 degree, or equivalent, in a relevant technical subject
  • Experience of C, C# or C++ programming and of the full product development lifecycle
  • Some knowledge of communications systems equipment specification, design or test
  • Some understanding of communications modulation techniques
  • Practical experience of some of the following: embedded software, development in Windows or Linux, network technologies, and Python, HTML, JavaScript, ASP.NET, SQL or SNMP
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders
