About the Role
The Young Person Housing Coordinator supports young people aged 18–25 who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or require support to maintain stable accommodation. The role combines housing management and support responsibilities, ensuring practical and person‑centred support for greater independence.
Key Responsibilities
- Young Person Support
- Manage a caseload of young people aged 18–25, delivering support plans based on individual needs and goals.
- Support young people to access and maintain suitable accommodation.
- Ensure young people understand their tenancy rights and responsibilities.
- Develop independent living skills.
- Support individuals to maximise their income, manage finances, and access benefits and grants where appropriate.
- Promote positive mental and physical wellbeing and support access to relevant health services.
- Assist young people in accessing education, training, volunteering and employment opportunities.
- Conduct regular support sessions, reviews, risk assessments and action planning.
- Identify and manage risks, safeguarding concerns and welfare issues in accordance with organisational procedures.
- Encourage engagement with support and other community services.
- Housing and Tenancy Management
- Complete tenancy sign‑ups and ensure tenants fully understand tenancy agreements, house rules, security of tenure, and responsibilities.
- Issue keys, tenant handbooks and all relevant tenancy documentation.
- Support tenants with Housing Benefit and Universal Credit housing‑cost applications and ongoing claims.
- Carry out regular property inspections, health and safety checks, housekeeping audits and tenancy visits.
- Support tenants to manage rent payments and reduce rent arrears through advice and practical assistance.
- Address anti‑social behaviour concerns, tenancy breaches, neighbour disputes and abandonment issues in line with housing policies.
- Provide advice and support regarding resettlement and move‑on accommodation opportunities.
- Work with housing providers, landlords and partner agencies to minimise void periods and maximise occupancy levels.
- Maintain accurate housing records, tenancy files and management information systems.
- Property Management
- Monitor the condition, security and upkeep of accommodation.
- Report repairs, liaise with contractors and monitor works through to completion.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements, including gas, electrical, fire safety and other statutory checks.
- Assist in maintaining communal areas and support residents to contribute to household responsibilities through agreed rotas where appropriate.
- Participate in annual property reviews and identify future maintenance and improvement requirements.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Experience supporting vulnerable young people, individuals facing homelessness or complex support needs.
- Knowledge of housing, tenancy sustainment, homelessness prevention or supported accommodation services.
- Ability to build positive, professional relationships and engage young people effectively.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to assess needs, identify risks and develop support plans.
- Good organisational skills and ability to manage a varied caseload.
- Competent IT skills and experience maintaining accurate records.
- Understanding of safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion principles.
Desirable Knowledge
- Knowledge of Housing Benefit, Universal Credit and welfare benefits.
- Experience within supported housing, homelessness, youth services or social care.
- Understanding of housing legislation and tenancy management practices.
- Relevant qualification in Housing, Youth Work, Social Care, Health & Social Care, or a related field.
