Location: Flexibility to pick a base from any services within County Durham Drug and Alcohol Services to work from (community based role therefore applicants must have own transport)

About the role: The role of our Specialist Stop Smoking Lead will be to provide 1-1 support to clients either face to face or over the phone and recommend appropriate medication and/or Nicotine Replacement Therapy to smokers who live or work in County Durham. Our Specialist Stop Smoking Service is based on good practice detailed in the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training Programme, and you will be expected to attain this qualification for the role. You will support the delivery of evidence-based, equitable, stop smoking services that help to reduce health inequalities throughout our County, including the delivery of services within areas of multiple deprivation and to smokers from our target demographics. It is essential that the postholder can work flexibly, independently, and as part of a team and can work with others to achieve targets for our Stop Smoking Service.

What you'll do:

  • Motivate, empower and enable clients to make informed choices regarding their smoking addiction, and support in their setting of realistic sustainable goals that lead to quitting smoking tobacco.
  • Motivate and support staff to understand more about smoking cessation and available options. Train and upskill staff where required.
  • Develop and deliver evidence-based stop smoking interventions, which may include one-to-one clinics, drop-ins, group sessions, telephone, or online support, in accordance with the NCSCT Standard Treatment Programme.
  • To improve outcomes for children, parents/carers and families of services users by reducing the impact of smoking related harm on family life and promote positive family involvement in recovery.
  • Lead amongst internal and external key stakeholders, professionals and agencies to embed smoking cessation as part of delivery for client care goals.
  • Manage a service user caseload, devising, implementing and reviewing on-going recovery plans and treatment, liaising closely with the full range of workers and skills within the service team, including family members and significant others as appropriate.
  • To lead effective case management for allocated service users, including on-going processes such as risk assessments, risk management plans and safeguarding assessments and plans. This includes the effective use of an online case management system.
  • Promote visible recovery across the service and ensure peer support opportunities are relevant and accessible for all service users.

What you'll need to succeed in the role:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care (or above or equivalent).
  • Applicants MUST have their own Transport as the role is community based.
  • Relevant professional qualification e.g. addiction studies, counselling, social work, therapeutic qualification. (desirable)
  • Understanding of and ability to implement evidence-based interventions, including brief interventions MI, PSIs, CBT and ITEP.
  • Experience of working with drug/alcohol users and delivering 1-2-1 and group evidence-based interventions. (desirable)
