SHE and Sustainability Advisor Role Description * Work within the SHEQ department of a Medium sized multidisciplinary contractor around London and the South-East. * Lead the business’ environmental management system and hold responsibility for the environmental compliance and performance of all construction projects and wider activities. * Lead the business’s sustainability strategy and hold responsibility for completing the annual carbon reporting, measuring, and reducing environmental impacts, and proposing developments which improve the sustainability of business operations. * Provide expert advice to the business and its staff on environmental and sustainable best practice with reference to the construction and built environment sector. * Report directly to the Board and Senior Management Team, and work with staff at all levels to deliver sustainable development of projects and the business. * Assist in the management and delivery of BREEAM accredited projects and achieving other recognised sustainability accreditations. * Assist the Health and Safety Manager to maintain and develop the H&S and Quality Management systems, completing semiregular SHEQ audits on-site, assisting in the planning and delivery of projects, and completing various SHEQ team projects. * Provide bidwriting support to the work-winning teams on common topics around environmental impact, sustainable project delivery, and social value. Essential Skills and Knowledge * Understanding of key sustainability and environmental topics in the built environment * Understanding and ability to complete annual carbon and environmental impact reporting. * Proficient with data collection, recording, and reporting practices * Proficient with digital tools for data management (noncode based) generally high level of competence across Microsoft and other common applications. * Proficient in written communication in bid writing, reporting, presentations or similar. * Ability to individually manage time and work with multiple different departments and projects concurrently. * Some knowledge of relevant current UKbased environmental legislation * Some knowledge and experience working within the BREEAM certification scheme. * Willingness to travel to project sites infrequently (once/twice a week). Desirable Skills and Knowledge * Demonstrated knowledge and experience in implementing and managing ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, including associated processes such as Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs). * Understanding of H&S and Quality management topics within the built environment * Understanding of Whole Life Carbon, Embodied vs Operational Carbon, Energy Efficiency etc. * Experience managing large amounts of environmental data and providing recommendations from data analysis. * Experience researching and recommending training on key sustainability / environmental topics. * Willingness to work across multiple areas of the business including clientfacing roles. * Able to work independently and to deadlines imposed from across the business. Essential Qualifications * Undergraduate degree in Sustainability, Environmental Studies, or another relevant environmental / sustainability subject Desirable Qualifications * Higher level degree (MSc, Chartership etc.) in a relevant field such as environmental consulting, sustainability, construction management etc. * BREEAM training to AP level or higher Desired Experience Level Role would suit an early career environmental advisor or sustainability consultant in a similar built environment role, looking to take a step into more organisational development and responsibility to manage and report directly across a whole organisation, rather than just a single project or topic. The person should be very capable to self-manage their workload and be flexible to meeting the needs of different people from across the business. The person should also be very knowledgeable in sustainability more generally and be able to communicate about technical topics within the subject to non-technical or less informed staff and stakeholders, both through spoken and written communication. The person should have a true passion for delivering a more sustainable business / built environment / world and posses the skills, knowledge, and experience to drive the business forward with the understanding that this is a significant and sometimes difficult to realise transition for a traditional-based construction company and one which requires patience and competent judgement to help guide senior management through the ever growing need to become more sustainable and responsible
