This Manchester-based costs role offers something rare in the market, proper flexibility combined with a steady stream of high-quality work. You’ll be part of a small, experienced team handling a growing volume of external private costs matters, with the autonomy to manage your own caseload from early on.
In your first few months, you’ll settle into the team and take ownership of your own files, primarily focused on paying party work, disputes and negotiations. There’s also exposure to legal aid work where needed, giving you variety without overwhelming your day-to-day focus. By the 12-month mark, you’ll be running a full and varied caseload with minimal supervision, working directly with clients and supporting both internal teams and external instructions.
Longer term, as the team continues to grow, there’s scope to step into a more senior position, whether that’s mentoring others or helping shape how the department evolves. The culture is informal, supportive and built on trust. People manage their own time, work around life commitments and aren’t micromanaged. It’s a team where people tend to stay, not because they have to, but because the environment works.
